Why does everyone use Fenders?

Man, that sucks, Rocky. It's a damn shame that people have to be concerned with this garbage. But it's a real problem, and seems to be getting worse. Especially in the big cities. Get well soon...
Thank Jeff, I was renting a room from this guys dad, and he warned me after I moved in that his kid ( a 35 yr old) had serious anger issues. Long story short he threatened to kill me in a rage outside my bedroom window that day, and so I called the police like his father suggested. They came and told him to leave me alone so he had his buddies ambush me that evening. Sorry everyone for the thread derailment.

Sounds like a real piece of excrement. Be careful. Somebody 35 years old and still acting like that isn't likely to change. If at all possible, you might want to get another place to stay. Sounds like a good reason to get out of a lease without penalty. I too am sorry for the derail, but this kind of crap makes my blood boil. Seriously, be careful...

My sister drove me too my moms house after I was released from the ER, and I had several friends help me get my stuff out of there the following weekend. The police are investigating, but I am not sure I want to pursue legal recourse. God knows what that would bring..

If you try this fender P

People use Fenders because they sound good, are built well and are at a tolerable price point.

Pretty much sums it up.

Plus when a sound man or recording engineer sees one they know exactly how to make it sound like what you expect a bass to sound like.

And I'm not a Fender fanboy. Only have one, a Starcaster, but am seriously considering one of the Japanese SS Jazzes in white.

I've never owned one, and never really felt a real need to have one. I almost bought a 5 string jazz, but in the end it was priced a little higher than I was willing to pay. That turned out to be a good thing when I came across a good deal on an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro. I talked my IT guy into a used Geddy Lee jazz that the local shop had for a very reasonable price. I wanted to make sure he had it so I could borrow it from time to time.

answer is... "because" ... that's it. To some it'll make sense to others it's not their cup of tea. That's okay too.
I've been playing bass for over 30 years and was a little smug about the fact that I didn't own a single Fender bass during that time - now I feel like I did myself a grave injustice and perhaps should have given it a chance many years ago. I guess I had Fenderphobia for all those years previously- everyone else had them, I wanted something different from everyone else. My basses had to be active and have a gazillion knobs- that was my preference then, now I really like the simplicity and feel of Fender basses.
I only bought my first real Fender bass last year and I've bought over 60 basses to date! (I've been busy playing the flipping game the past 4 years or so.) My current favorite basses are all passive and all Fender basses.

Is a Shure SM58 the best microphone? Not even close - but it is the most widely used microphone in the world. So it is with Fender basses - they are good enough and deliver such predictable results that many musicians never try anything else.

Face it .... Fenders are iconic and demand respect. (My opinion).

I've dumped everything that doesn't have a Fender or Tuxedo (basses I've built) logo and I don't think I could be happier.

Well .... that's not TOTALLY true, after all .... I'm married to a musically intolerant woman.

No more Ibanezzezzes for me, although they are perfectly good gear. I would never be caught with a Teletubby bass either.

An amusing historical note. After 31 years of playing my Gibson Ripper (and the last six years also with a fretless Wishbass), I'm going to consider buying a Squier J-bass. Definitely within the Fender penumbra, to my way of looking at it.

At first I was thinking of a second fretted bass to keep flats on, but I wasn't that thrilled with the flats I just tried on the Ripper, so the remaining interest is more to do with single-coil sound and separate volumes for each pickup versus the 4-way switching on the Ripper. We shall see how it goes.
