Why does everyone use Fenders?

... bought and played my first one 46 years ago, and everything else I bought/tried probably got compared to how that brand felt/sounded ... other than a couple Peaveys I had, I guess the Fender(esque) just felt like home, and nothing else stuck around ... probably the same as why did many of my generation get vehicle brands that their parents drove when they started driving in the late 60's ... familiarity ?? ... maybe just that simple ...

Do what I did and play for 15 years all different kind of basses and then go pick up a jazz bass. Not trying to be a &$@@&& just what happened to me. The jazz bass is so open sounding and let's you get lows, low mids, mids, and highs all out of one instrument. It took me becoming a better all around bass player to make my fender speak :)

Does this thread make any sense in a world where countless bass makers sell Fender Jazz or Precision clones such as Lakland, Lull, Sadowsky, Carvin, G&L, Schecter?...so if you are playing one of those clones you are also, in a way, playing a Fender, right? It just does not say Fender on the headstock.

Some say they look dated. I say they look NORMAL. Some guys want fancy pants, so that's what they get but they're talking out of their hats to say that a booteek is better, no, just different.

You can spend 1500 on a MIA and take it to a luthier (or DIY) for custom setup, fret dress, fallaway, nut tweak for a couple hundred and it will play as good as a 2500 boutique. Not the same feeling as, but just as well: it will simply still have the Fender feel. To say it can't be as refined is just ridiculous. If it ain't your bag, fine. Dyed in the wool Fender players similarly don't like boutique jobs.

Slamming someone's choice is stoo-oopid.

+100

And that is exactly what happened to me.

I highly recommend “How the Fender Bass Changed the World” by Jim Roberts (former Editor in Chief for Bass Player mag). It’s a pretty broad overview, but it does give you an idea of the impact Fender had over the years. While one could make the assumption that it pays lip service only to Fender (and you know what is said about assumptions!), it really touches on the history of the bass guitar as a whole, with mentions of the innovations made by other instrument manufacturers over the years, as well as the various bassists and what they did to innovate the craft of playing the bass guitar.

No kidding. I'm recuperating from being ambushed by three punks on 8/4. I'm just now able to sleep on the couch instead of a chair for a few hours at a time, and so I have spent way to much time here..
Hopefully I can get back to playing my bass soon.

That's a hot debate, actually. Lots of players would say that Precision or Jazz basses are only made by Fender; that the others are copies or clones - "Fender-style" basses.
Or Super Js and Super Ps...

I grew up playing a Fender Am Std Jazz. I currently own a Fender Am Std J (2011) and Am Std P (2013). As indicated by the photo above, I also have a Lakland USA Joe Osborn Jazz and a USA Bob Glaub (with the Osborn J neck). My USA Laklands cost about 2.5x the price of my Am Std Fenders. In my view, they are worth it. Although I like my Fenders, the Laklands are superior for many reasons including playing comfort, weight, neck feel, fretwork, wood quality and overall fit/finish. They are obviously Fender designs, but they take it to another level.

Oh yea, this thread is indeed silly, but that's TB....

Hope you feel better soon, and I hope those weasels get some quality time in prison.

I will have to buy that book next time I make an amazon purchase, thanks.

Thank you Jimmy I appreciate the sentiment. I am not sure what to do if they catch these guys. On one hand they deserve to be in jail, but on the other hand I'm affraid of parking lot retaliation in the future. I play out allot so I am easy too find, and this was done too me as retaliation the very day I called the cops for being threatened by my ex roommate. His father warned me not to be friendly with him saying that he has issues. I should've took this to heart

Man, that sucks, Rocky. It's a damn shame that people have to be concerned with this garbage. But it's a real problem, and seems to be getting worse. Especially in the big cities. Get well soon...
