Why Doesn't Vox Make Bass Amps?

vox t-60?
T60.jpg
Were those recent little Vox "T" series amps any good? I wanted one of these T-60s (incredibly, the largest of the three!) as a practice amp purely on looks and just missed the Musician's Friend closeout on them at $129.

July 20, 2001

VOX presents the powerful and expressive T-60, the newest member in its line of T-Series bass combos. The T-60 provides 60 Watts of the classic VOX tone that was the foundation of the legendary "British Invasion", along with a wide array of articulate modern bass sounds. Rugged and compact, the T-60 is equipped with a specially designed 12" VOX bass speaker and tweeter horn for added range.

An on board tone-shaping section includes a 4-band equalizer and a special Bassilator switch that maximizes the bass frequencies to provide added depth, harmonic undertones and resonance to the overall sound. Additional hands-on controls include Volume, Treble, High Mid, Low Mid and Bass.

just as a matter of interest...

I remember having this amp in 1965.... I sold my Standel solid state for one of these. I had to set the head in front of a fan because it would overheat and fart out....

Their first ones sucked so bad.

Cheers,
Cameron

I was watching the Paulie Mac dvd at Red Square and digging his back line with all that groovy Vox speaker cloth. Man that is nice looking!

So why doesn't Vox make a nice 300-500 watt bass amp with a couple of tubes in the pre? Maybe a 2-12 bin? Go for that great vintage tone with some modern clean added. Like a Trace Elliot V600H (for example).

They seem to be selling a boatload of guitar amps. Plus they're made in China so it's not actually costing them anything! I'm smelling a perfect opportunity!

I'd buy it. I love that Vox look. Oh well. One could always buy some speaker cloth and fake it -- but . . .

My first bass amp back in 1966 was a (Thomas Organ Co.) 120 watt VOX Westminster amp with an 18" speaker cabinet on a trolly. I saw the Animals at a theater in Madison, WI and really liked the look of the bass players amp although I really wanted a Super Beatle (AC 100). Little did I know it was a backline from a local store (Ward Brodt Music) and I was able the buy the very same amp that was used that night by Chas Chandler!

I have a Q-series 100watt combo which sounded like **** til I blew it up. I now use it as a 15" cabinet. Does a decent job at that but weighs a tonne. It doesn't have the classic vox look either.

I had a 2x12 guitar amp named the "Vox Viscount" purchased back in the day in pristine condition still under warranty. Came with 2 blown speakers which got replaced under warranty. Tried it with bass and was not loud or good. Sold it to a guitarist friend of mine.
Never seen one since.

with the same respect, I know. but i love how those amps look. is this wrong?
:-)

Absolutely not. VOX did make good looking amps. What gets my goat is when the crowd over here judge real VOX amps by the unreliable SS trash issued by Thomas Organ. Tom Jennings got screwed over by Thomas Organ and it lead to the demise of his company. British VOX amps were the mainstay of the British music scene just as Fender were over here.

I still get a surge of pleasure when I see an AC30 on concert stages.

i dont have a lot of informations about JENNINGS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES [JEI] though. if anyboday can help out somehow...

i always liked the vox look so i built my own 160 watt 100% tube Super Beatle chassis from scratch and used Northcoast cabinets (a 2-15 and head cab box). some of you may have seen these pics of it on talkbass before. the cab has 2-15" JBL K140's in it:

while not actually made by Vox, both of them sound great.

2 cents.....

Geez, that's pretty impressive. You're pretty handy with tools, eh? How did you go about building the head? Was it a kit or did you just do it from a schematic somehow?

thanks.
i bought a chassis and had to cut it down to fit inside the vox head box. i used a Marshall type lug board and then had custom-made transformers made for it by Heyboer. the circuit is a blend of Marshall, Sunn, and Fender tone circuits, with four KT100 output tubes running with 520 volts on the B+.

These amps are just too cool not to bump.

I plan on building a 15w Class A + 200w Transistor power amp (two power amps) All fed by one pre amp amplifier that feeds a crossover onto the power amps. (like an old Versatone) All in VOX clothing.
