Why DR strings are amazing

My experiences w/DR... Played lo-riders for a couple years, was "ok".. Tried a set of Hi-Beams, took'em right back off.. All twang, no beef... Fat beams are IMO the best tone out of the package hands down. Unfortunately the set I had went dead in a month, and when they go dead, there ain't nothing you can do to get a good tone out of them.. I found D'Addario Pro Steels to approximate that tone and last longer, and the set of Cleartones I have on it now has lasted well over a year w/o an appreciable loss of tone..

I've pretty much just used Ernie Ball Power Slinky 55-110's on my Tbird Studio because thats what my local shop carries in 110's. I'm happy with the feel and sound they produce, but I noticed tonight that I was losing that new string bite, so guess its time for a fresh set.

I won't have time to get any DR's this time, but with all the hype around TB over them, I'm ready to give them a shot, especially if they last longer than Eballs. Any suggestions on what flavor I should try?

I just bought a set of hi beams for my 5er (been a long time lo rider user). As I was stringing up the low B (.125) the damn thing snapped! A string 1/8" thick. I was amazed.

I called DR and they said they would send me a replacement. The mail just came, they sent me a whole new pack! I've been playing DR's for as long as I can remember...and that's one more reason why. THANKS!

gonna give DR another shot. I bought the Hi-Beams when they first came out. They sounded OK but not as good as Rotos. Just bought the LH5-40 Lo-Rider set to hear what they sound like. I'll give my critique :bassist:

not a good experience. I haven't bought DR's in 10 years and it looks like they changed their string lengths. The B-string was 42" which is way too long. The rep told me the string was cut too long by mistake. I told him the bass is 37" scale so he sent me 2 packs and the B-strings were 39" :scowl: I contacted the rep and he told me their standard length is 38" which isn't marked on any of the packages. I have 3 packs of Lo-Riders I can't even use. :rollno: Oh well, back to Rotosounds :bassist:

However, while installing my don't-know-how-manyth set of DR strings, i cut one set too short and there was not enough grip for the strings to hold. In fact, cos of the high pressure due to the short bit of string holding on, my string broke as i strung it up. (actually more like, the tuner cut thru the string)

DR was nice enough to send me a new set, though. For that, i'm a customer for life.

Their strings being great also helps.

Well, I have a set of Jonas Hellborgs on my four-string P that‘s just for home recording, and recently got a set of medium nickel low riders for my gigging Jazz V.

My guitarist, experienced in setting up guitars a basses put them on for me along with a set of bassline pickups, but the B string unwound at the tuner.

I found where I could order a single B string, but the cost was prohibitive, so I just bought a whole new set, and figured I’d use the B and sell the other four to someone with a four-string, or even put on a four-string Jazz I have for sale.

Then I thought I should just try their customer service, so, I just went to the DR site and sent them an email explaining all, and we’ll see what happens.

I implied that a single B string would be wonderful (which I‘d be happy with), but hey, if they send me a whole set, I’ll put those on my Squier Jazz V, replace the B on the Fender V, and still have a four-string set.

Or, I could save them for the ATK305 that’s become my gigging bass for now, when the stock Elixirs need replaced.

Wish me luck. :)

Well I got a new set of Black Beauties and the B string snapped on it when I was installing it. In fact I can just bend the string and it will snap in half. DR said the core was bad and they will replace it. Great customer service, but it's kinda scary that this keeps happening in the first place. I love some DR's, but jeez. I don't want to expect a broken string in every set I get.

If anyone would be willing, it would be helpful for those of us who haven't tried DR strings if those who have a favorite type would also say what kind of music you play or what sound you are going for. There's just no reference one someone says "I really love high beams". I mean, that's great for you but what are you doing with them - jazz, metal, blues, funk, rock? Going for a mid growly sound, or a crisp metal sound or a smooth jazz sound?

If anyone feels like adding that kind of info to their opinion it will help some of the rest of us to have a frame of reference to know whether we might like them too.

For example, if High Beams are the preference of metal players everywhere and I want a smooth jazzy sound or a deep warm tone, or a growly tone, then it might not be the one for me, but maybe Sunbeams are or Low Riders are.

Here's another vote for D R strings - I think they make a phenomenal product. I've used several models of strings including HiBeams, LoRiders, Black Beauties and their guitar strings and they all sound spectacular. They last a long time too.

Anyone have old or used bass strings that they don't want or need? Pm me. Need for a creative design.

I work at a music store and I called DR for a special order of strings.. they called me back and were the nicest manufacturer I have ever spoke with.. Not to mention that the woman i spoke with sounded like an Angel..:smug:

I think that DR strings are almost too good to be true.. Maybe they have enslaved gnomes working magic in their buildings.. that explains it. DR gnomes.

What store do you work at?

DR's are simply awesome. I auditioned a lot of different strings over the years and I settled on DR's. I've used Highbeams for years now and Black Beauties for the last 18 months on 2 basses - I'm interested to try a set of lowriders.
