It's just a crutch to keep the presenter from feeling like everyone is eyeballing him. I really hate it when someone makes a presentation with all this bullet points that fly in, fade in, whatever. CHEESY!

For technical presentations, ppt's can be very helpful. On the flipside, one of the other things that bothers me is when I go to a technical class and the student manual is nothing but a reprint of the ppt slides with a paragraph or two underneath it. That's just lazy.

I suppose if I were to be rational about it, I would realize that I am using PP as a whipping boy. After all, PP does nothing but turn pixels on and off. Someone has to be responsible for turning on the Content Pixels and turning off the Drivel Pixels.

Old thread but w/e.

I've had my macbookpro for 2 years. No slowdown. No virii. No mal/adware. Barely ever crashes.

I've had pc laptops that havent achieved that in even half the time.

I've used it heavily. Its got battle scars, been used for live shows and heavy weight design apps (I can often be editing A1 documents with 100+ layers at 300DPI in photoshop with my dual screen attatched). Never once lost work due to a crash. Never once died mid show.

I may be tempting fate here but my god I've never known any computer to be so reliable. Nor any OS as efficient (for me anyway).

Oh and I was a die hard windows user until 2 years ago :)

I wouldn't even consider anything but a mac if I were looking for a new laptop.

They say that the Macbook Pro is the only one that is worth going with over similarly spec'd notebook PCs. Both the Air and the mainstream model get pretty soundly trounced by cheaper but better performing notebooks. The Air is an absolute ripoff IMO. It cannot touch the Lenovo X300.

FYI: Maximum PC is a solid mag. Despite the name they are not Apple bashers and often review and praise Apple products.

WOW! I forgot about this thread.

Well, a little while after starting this thread I bought a Macbook Pro and an iMac when my desktop took a dive. After a few months using both, here are some thoughts on the Mac family and some of the claims that were made by some mac afficionados and mac lovers:

"Macs never crash" - I've found this to be true. Haven't yet experienced a system wide crash. The whole reason I went to mac is because I bought a pc with Vista on it and sent it back. Vista was a joke. I knew things wouldn't get too much better when Microsoft announced they were already working on their next operating system - Windows 7. Why not fix the one you have now?

"Mac programs never stop working" - Not true IME. I've had to force quit iMovie on 2 occasions and Safari on 1 occasion because it stopped responding. However, this is still far less than with my XP or Vista PC experience, and I'm using my Mac far more now because I'm doing a lot of research and writing.

"Macs are plug and play with any printer" - Nope. They are already plug and play with a lot of printers, but not all. Definitely a better situation than with my PC's, though.

"Macs never get viruses" - There was an internet article someone posted in the Off Topic forum and maybe pasted into this thread as well, but it explained how during a hacker's convention the first system breach was through a weak spot in Safari. Now, if you follow common sense then you shouldn't get a virus on either a PC or a Mac (don't open suspicious attachments, be careful about the sites you visit, etc.). I think this fallacy came from the fact that there aren't as many Mac viruses as Windows viruses simply because there aren't as many people writing viruses for Macs. Both sides will argue differently about this so I'm not sure who to believe. Apple says its all because of the Unix based blah blah blah...I'm not that tech savvy but I think it can be done and people are just not doing it. I just know that in 10 years owning PC's I never got a virus.

"You don't have to worry about updating software" - Not true. Definitely not as much as with my pc, but you still have to run software update.

"Macs are better...'nuff said" - I agree with this one. The software integration allows me to do some really neat stuff as a teacher and I can bypass certain time consuming steps that I would have to take when I was running my PC. I won't go into all of the stuff I'm talking about, but there is a lot of pros to owning a Mac that you can't get with a PC right out of the box, IMO. I own a Time Capsule as well and that works flawlessly. I will have to use it when I get home because I deleted an old file that I meant to keep.

Besides all of that, it seems like Microsoft is always one step behind Apple. Instead of looking into the future and being creative to come up with something, they're always copying something of Apple's. The Zune comes to mind, and now they are coming out with Windows 7, their new OS, and it has touchpad type capabilities...wait for it...just like Apple's been running all along with their multi-touch capabilities on the Macbook Pros and iPhone and iPod Touch. I think that Apple really put the nail in the coffin when they allowed users to run Windows on a Mac...and it ends up being more stable on a Mac according to some tests run by different magazines.

Bottom line is that some of the claims aren't entirely true, but I'm still way happier with my Mac than with my Windows based PC's.

That's the day I leave Mac. I have been a Mac user since day one in the Performa days.

The recent Mac vs PC commercials are just arrogant "ass" material, but.... as a Mac user all these years, as with a Gibson bass player, Cleveland Browns & Indian fan, all you get is abuse. It comes with the underdog territory.

When I first moved to Chicago I had a Cleveland Indians Tee shirt and while on a walk with my wife, some guy mowing the lawn across the street sees me, turns off his lawn mower, runs across the street to ridicule the Indians (he was from Cleveland it turns out)

Or as someone I know coined us as "Mac Homo's".

After re-reading the posts in this thread it looks like its always the Hardcore PC fanatics that start the mud-slinging. Both PC and Mac have their upside as well as their downside. It's usually the people that claim one side without being able to recognize any good in the other and formulate an HONEST opinion that are...how did you put it?...small-world, limited-view users.

Windows keep the IT business in business. Bottom line. Without Windows there would be a LOT less IT jobs. ;)

Xavidman - Thanks for the post. I became a dedicated all Mac guy when OSX came out. It's just a far superior operating system than Windows. In the past I ran both systems. Eventually, I found that all I was doing on my PC was running updates and sniffing out virus and spyware.

It's not mud slinging. I recognize what makes Mac's great for some things, and horrible for others. The consumer view of Mac users, and PC users for that matter, is very limited and small world. Spend a day on the job with me, and you'd understand what I'm saying, regardless of which camp you are in.

This is what I'm talking about. It's not superior at all. It's a consumer view to think that. In the business world, Mac's are way inferior.
