Why have so many basses?

Certainly not to be judgemental or come across superior in any way.other but i often wonder why do so many people own so many expensive basses when they can hardly play one? maybe i am missing something here, but it just seems pointless and a waste. is it perhaps an insecurity thing . you know the more great basses you have will make you a better player? also it would stand to reason that a serious player would want to "bond" with one instrument and get to know it intimately. i would think that is important. in my first years i had one good 80s fender precision bass that was with me for many bands clubs and gigs. i didn't need 10 basses. was just wondering what others thought.
Just curious - exactly how many are too many (in your opinion) and why?

For not being judgmental, that post if pretty judgmental.

Why? Because I want to. It isn't because this one is great for this, and that one is great for that. It is simply because I want to.

I agree with its wvbass post and Do I smell jealousy?

I’m probably one of the worst bass players on this thread however I’ve been blessed to be with the company I’m with over 17 years which led to many promotions. This allows me the opportunity to work on the one thing true to my heart (opposite of my wife & son) which is becoming an amazing bassist. Will it ever happen? Who knows. I do know I will never go on-line belly aching regarding how another man/women spends their hard earned money.

Well collecting is fine. but when it affects a serious players ability to get an instrument he truly needs or would do justice by owning. well then i just don't agree with collectors. guitars were meant to be played.
Huh? So, someone has a bass you may covet, so they aren't worthy of owning it so you can have it, instead? Oy!

...it’s really only annoying to me when people refuse to sell a rare bass that they probably never play.
I had a very rare and desirable to a few (who covets them) bass for 38 years. It got gigged quite often from sleazy dives to large festivals over the years, but I realized that in the later years I wasn't playing it much, so I sold it to someone who is now the current caretaker of it. If I had decided to keep that bass it would have just stayed in a closet and not be flaunted to the world. ;)

Edit: spelling

When I first joined, I thought I knew who were the most hated...excuse me, unliked, not loved so much...oh, whatever. I’m not living near the exotic country you are, or were, so rude comments should be proper internet protocol,
Sorry, KBD, your crown seems to be slipping. (Said of course with all due respect)
:woot:
And an added silly face to show this comment was made tongue in cheek.
Wow, this thread has really got some legs!

So.... not to get back on topic or anything.... but... Ive read this whole thread and have an observation..or more like a question.
What if somebody is arguing that you only need one bass and theyre arguing with somebody that owns 8. But all eight equal the price of the other guys one?
Is this like an inception thing where the argument of too many basses runs into the argument of why get one expensive bass when you can get more cheap ones?
Like... there are obviously limits and extremes, but still

at least something got figured out
Yes. Introspection can be very frightening yet very healing at the same time.
OP is started down the path to enlightenment. Wish him well on his journey. Allow him to stumble from time to time. Only when you stub your toe do you learn to watch your step. You can't make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without opposable thumbs. :roflmao:

killed by death. envy of what? i have the three bass guitars i love. i don't need or want anymore. is that so hard to understand?

Ok so what specific situation led to you creating this thread? I mean this without joking or anything, but if you are secure in your bass ownership, why the distress over other people's gear?

mr ace. Why when this thread is very vibrant and working out just fine should i go somewhere else. people are angry and on attack so i will no doubt reciprocate.
Don’t mistake disagreement and humor for anger and attack. If I got angry at everything I thought was silly, I would have had a mental breakdown during the years when my son was young enough for SpongeBob SquarePants.

todcaster. is it? you probably have not read most of this thread so whatever.

Quite the contrary; I’ve read it from the first post. I’m still spellbound at some of the things you’ve said. A decline in instrument quality is due to hobbyists buying more basses? Seriously? You said that. The instrument was made to be played? Give me a break, the instrument was made to be sold. Period. The manufacturer doesn’t care what you do with it as long as they were able to move the product. These are but a few nuggets. I’m happy to point out more.
