Why is Fender so Popular?

Well, for most of us who want to get paid, it IS an issue. Theres only one bass brand I've ever had specifically requested for gigs and studio work, and that's a Fender.

fender is definately popular cuz of numbers... so many other companies should have their status. they only have 4 bass models, (two of which are good (jag and mustang)) and their artists models aren't that cool, either. frankly, a true diehard bass company like warwick should wear fender's title, or even yamaha just because their basses are spectacular.

Another thing that occured to me as I was reading these posts is that a lot of the popularity of Fender didn't come with just the Jazz and the Precision, but also on the other side of the business with the Stratocaster and the Telecaster. Everybody knows those 2 instruments if you've ever listened to classic rock or blues or anything in between. They see the Fender label again and so that helps a lot with the popularity of the WHOLE company, not just the basses.

HAHAHA! That's funny, dude!

But you're right...Fender IS definitely popular because of the numbers. How else do you get popular? Every other bass has a fair chance on the market to overtake Fender, and nobody has for over 50 years. Not even close. I'm sure the Fender haters on here think we're all under a mass voodoo spell. But the fact remains that Fender is still the most popular bass on the market by a longshot. You don't get that kind of longetivity by sucking.

Maybe, maybe not. I note that quality comparisons between GM and Toyota have been available to consumers for 30 years. These are objective published test results. And during that time, the best GM car has been worse than the worst Toyota every which way.

Just this year, Toyota (just barely, worldwide) outsold GM - and GM still sells more cars in the US. GM hasn't kept their sales superiority all those decades because their vehicles didn't suck - they sucked bigtime. But people just keep right on buying (and repairing, and repairing, and repairing) them. For many years, it was said of the IBM PC that you couldn't buy worse, and you couldn't pay more, going to the competition. Yet IBM was the sales leader for a very long time.

I wouldn't be surprised if the same were true of Fender basses, within their price ranges. To compete with Fender, you gotta be like a black or female worker competing with white males in the workforce - to break even, you must be TWICE as good at the price.

I don't know I think everybody needs to a Fender.... and a Ric... and a Hofner... and a MM.... and a Smith ... and a Modulus.... and _______.

Anyway you get the idea.

Honestly though, its a great product. I think there is a Fender bass out there for everyone, even if some do say Lakland, PensaSuhr, Sadowsky or even Sx... they still are all basically Fender "style" basses

You had me until you got to the resale value thing...I am going to lose a boatload of cash on my custom basses when I go to sell them, so don't tell me resale value isn't important! ;)

I don't think your comment was directed at me but for the record, I think Fenders sound great (Marcus, Jaco, etc.). I gig occasionally and have never been told by a band leader or soundman that I needed a Fender (nor by anyone in my bedroom for that matter :D).
