Why is picking a color so difficult?

I was really tempted by the white on white. However, with my tendency to dress in all black I'm not sure how that would look.

So, red it is. Order placed, it should be here in a few days.

I don't think you and I have the same definition of "limit".

Well... I put some thought into wants / needs and came up the following list:

1. PJ
2. J
3. Stingray 5
4. Modern double-humbucker 5
5. P with flats

That should cover most tasks but I wouldn't rule out a Stingray 4 or a J 5 sneaking in.

The white / white looks classy to me.

The red / white screams classic rock and country - not a bad thing.

I don’t get a vibe from the black / tort and I don’t really like the white / tort that much.

I'd agree with the above ratings.

White with a bold pearl guard like red or royal blue would look great too.

A J5 has a J4 built inyand a handy thumb rest that you can use to make even more bassy sounds than you can on a 4. I’m all 5’s at present, and see no need for a 4 string version of the same thing. My approach to a herd with a lot of diversity in a few instruments is based on not duplicating functionality. Not trying to preach, just suggesting approaches….

Never mind that I should be working. Never mind that I swore off Indonesian basses. Never mind that I have a self imposed 5 bass limit and now have 6.

I have been gassing for regular old P or PJ. The closest thing I have is a G&L Tribute SB-2. I have been casually searching for a used USA G&L LB-100 but haven't found one yet thats ticks all the right boxes for me (color, cost, condition).

I really like my Lakland Skyline DJ4 and I like the sound demos of the 44-64, so it seems like a valid option. But what color...

It reminds me of a quote from my profession:

Except maybe 11/8 time and picking a color.

Conventional TB thinking is that a poll is invalid unless it contains a "carrots" option, but I can see why you omitted it - TB'ers might have mistaken it for orange, so, good on you!

It is available in an ice blue of sorts, but my DJ4 is already that color and I am not really looking for twins.

Ice blue.
Black, red, and white are too common.
Just say yes to twins!

I really
Ike tort on black but, with that neck and those blocks, the black bass BEGS for a white pearl pickguard. But, since that’s not among your options, I have to go with white on white.
