Why is Scooping bad?? Hell, is it?

Let's not forget one other aspect - a lot comes down to the signal that is hitting the EQ.

Some basses and string combinations will be naturally more scooped sounding on their own, while others will have more prominent mids.

Scoop an already scooped tone further and yes, there is greater chance of it getting lost in a mix, but there are some gear combinations that sound best with some mids carved out in most situations.

Like most things it all comes down to the ear.
 
Mid scooping can be good or bad depending on the circumstances and desired sound, but it really requires a good understanding of EQing and the end result. Some basses have an inherent scoop (or boost), so blindly scooping the amp/head can magnify the loss of mids. Amp/heads can have a frequency bias too. In both cases, the EQ can be used to compensate.

My very experienced guitarist (who is also a pretty darned good bassist) does the blind scoop adjustment almost as a default reflex, "because that's what I've always done". More often than not, his sound suffers as a result.

Use a scoop if that works for your situation, but let your ears decide what works best.
 
It's not bad, overdoing it could be as it is with almost everything. What freq, and how much to cut/boost depends on what else is going on in the mix, and personal pref.
 
Every instrument has a range of frequencies that they cover, and many of them overlap in various places. The lows on a bass, for example, are in the same range as many bass drums. The highs on a bass are in guitar range. The bass frequencies on a guitar are in the bass mid-highs.

The reason why scooping is "bad" is because it steps on the toes of the other instruments while leaving gaps in the frequency spectrum. If you are playing with your bass scooped, then your lows are competing with the bass drum and your highs are competing with the guitars, while the mids - the frequency range that isn't really covered by any other instrument - is being cut. If the guitarist is scooping, their highs are competing with the cymbals and lows are competing with the bass, and their mid range - where no one else is really competing - is being cut. The tone might be good on its own, but in a group setting you'll just be muddying up the sound in some frequency ranges while having big gaps in other ranges.

EQing is partially about getting "your sound", but it's also about making sure that everyone has their own frequency space in the music you're creating, which makes the song stronger as a whole.
 
There is kind of this running joke, at least in heavy metal that guitarists over scoop their tones all the time. I was wondering why this thing that is apparently universally bad is also so prominent. I make an effort to avoid scooping my tone because I know it's fundamentally bad, but I don't really understand why-it doesn't sound terrible to me. Is it as bad as it's made out to be? What's going on here?
Here’s a tidbit that is rarely mentioned: “scooping” as a term of art came from the appearance of a frequency response curve when mids are significantly reduced. It looks like something was scooped out of the middle. That mids reduction yields a sound that’s appealing in most rock, blues & country guitar. Like all tone shaping it can be great and it can be a drag. If you play alone do what you like. If you play with others you all need to work it out together so the band sounds good. The musician’s pipe dream!!

it is neither bad nor good … you adjust your tone to fit your preference and your band.

I used to scoop mids in the old days... but now I usually boost mids

Like others said, thoughtful and deliberate scooping is not necessarily a problem. Just cranking the mids down indiscriminantly because it sounds great that way in your bedroom usually sucks. You hear a lot of criticism of it because, frankly, a person who needs someone on the internet to tell them how to EQ is a lot more likely to be doing the latter, not the former.
 
If scooping were bad, the Fender Jazz would have been a dismal failure. Any 2 pickup bass that lets you dial in both pickups at the same time will have scooping going on. So, some of it is OK, but too much removal of mids will take away your audible power in the mix.

Scooped tone actually sounds good. That’s why so often “bedroom” tone, created in isolation, is scooped and often scooped drastically.

The problem is losing presence, pitch definition, and punch in the mix while adding a bunch of low and high sonic energy that clutters those parts of the mix up. You can get to the “I am really loud but still can’t clearly hear myself” point pretty quickly in a dense mix.

So I find it come down to the amount of scooping, and exactly which frequencies are being scooped by the bass vs the guitars vs the keys. The mix of the kick and toms I find crucial to how I need to EQ to keep girth, presence, punch, and pitch definition in the mix.

As usual, it's not black or white.

There's nothing wrong with a mid-scoop sound... it depends on the context. It's not that your tone would be bad, it's that it can be bad *in the mix*.

When you play your bass alone, mid-scoop can actually sound really good. It's only 'bad' if it's a sound that does not work in a specific mix. Most times, you need a healthy dose of mids, low mids in particular, so that the bass has presence and punch... but it depends on what other instruments are there and how they're EQ'd. If you had other instruments very prominent on those frequencies, the mix may not sound very good if you pile up your bass on the same frequency region.
Imagine, I don't know... a trio, to make it simple... drums, a clean guitar, and bass. You can easily EQ that mix so that each instrument occupies certain territories without interfering. You can probably reduce your mids there and find a way to make the mix sound great. IN a busy metal track with two guitars... it can be harder, especially if the guitars choose to have a lot of bottom end, essentially encroaching on teh bass' territory. Without a healthy midrange, your bass will have no definition at all and all you'll hear is the very bottom end and some metallic clank on top. Sometimes that's exactly what you want, so it's good. Other times that's not what you want, so it's bad, and something has to change. Pitch definition is carried mostly on the mids, so it really depends whether you need the bass to be a bit clearer, more prominent, or providing a warm woolly blanket upon which the guitars and vocals will do their thing.

There's not right or wrong, just right or wrong *for a specific purpose*.

It's not just bass, it's the same with guitars. The typical newbie metal guitarist (I was one! :) ) typically finds a sound they like at home, and it typically is very heavy on the lows... because playing alone it sounds better that way. Add a lot of distortion, yeah, sounds great! Turn down the mids a bit... yeah, chunky riffs just fly off the fretboard. Awesome.
Then... join a few other guys, another guitar, drums, bass... you've got this awesome tone, turn it up and... you can't hear a thing, because you all did the same thing. Despair. Why? Where is my awesome tone??? :D
Leaving aside the fact that we perceive different frequencies better at different volumes, so you can't just find your sound in the bedroom and simply turn up (that would be another thread in itself), you need to 'carve' a niche in the mix for each instrument. That's what sound engineers work very hard to achieve night after night, band after band. It's not a difficult idea, but it takes a lot of practice to be good at it (that's why good sound engineers are in demand always and can earn a lot of money), so don't be discouraged if you need to work hard at it. Like most things, it comes with practice. Try to understand what frequency ranges are important for different things: what gives you clarity in vocals, what gives you a punchy prominent bass, how to separate the very low end between the bass guitar and the bass drum, etc. Then, you can choose whether to scoop teh mids or not, on purpose, with a goal in mind.

I found very interesting to listen to multitracks of well known songs that you can find online. The mix sounds good, then listen to each instrument alone... very often the guitars don't sound all that nice, and the bass? the bass often sounds dirty and middy... but put it together and... magic... it fits.

In short: it's all about the mix. A mid-scooped bass can be the perfect bass sound for one song, but not for another. Trust your ears and not hard fast rules about settings on an amp, or a pedal, or anything. Think about how the instruments fit together.
 
Whatever it takes to sit right in the mix with the other instruments and to have an appropriate sound for the genre. If that means scooping then absolutely. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever done a mix where I didn't scoop out some mud from either kick, bass, guitars or all of the above (but at different frequencies).

I'm talking about more subtle adjustments here though, not turning the mid knob on the amp down to zero and cranking the highs/lows. Still, whatever it takes to make it sound right.
