Why Mark Hoppus should not be bashed

i must give the guy some credit for this reason alone.

Well I have no idea who Mark Hoppus is, but I must take issue with this last post - there are large numbers of people who are famous entirely by accident and this is certainly no guarantee of any talent on their part. I mean - serial killers are famous - but I don't see this as any reason to aspire to being one!!

Further I have seen/heard literally hundreds of Jazz musicians who are in no way famous, but are extremely talented musicians.

that's fine. i just don't think having a record contract is criteria enough to absolve a musician from criticism, especially if it is deserved.

I agree 100%. But, I will give the benefit of the doubt, at least temporarily, to someone who plays an instrument and writes their own music. Thus, Blink 182 gets the benefit of the doubt, N'Sync does not.
As far as whether criticism is deserved, that's a matter of opinion. I can almost guarantee you wouldn't like Blink 182's music. But I don't think something so subjective as that is a basis for criticism. I think criticism is more relevant to a band's live performance. I've gone to see bands whose music I ended up not really caring for, but I had to admit they were great bands, from the standpoint of playing together well and being tight. That's not really subjective or a matter of taste.. a band is either tight, or it's not.. so criticism in that area is more relevant.

hey you guys, i know i havent posted in a while and im sure you all don remember me.

actually mark plays a fender custom jazz bass with a single p pickup, i havent paid close attention to the rock show video because im takeing summer classes but, i agree, many of blinks songs are great. i have been playing bass for 4 1/2 years and i play 6 string now, but do you all know how hard it is to write a good punk song? i play guitar and drums and all too now and i got to tell you, its kinda hard to keep from just repeating c-g-a-f chord patterns and stuff like that. now for a good punk bassist, look for charlie from nerf herder. that guy is one of the best most melodic bassists of all punk. check out i only eat candy off of the self titled cd and van halen as well, theres also a great non album version of 5000 ways to die that they did before he left. that last one is kinda obscure but its worth it if you can find it.

ps im prolly gonna change my name in a minute

Oh yeah - like it's much easier to write a Jazz standard or a Symphony!

no im not joking, look at the song dammit off of the dude ranch cd and ask yourself "can i write this song" the answer is no you can not be cause you didnt and you don have the cash to say that you did. and i know that composing a jazz thing or a sympony is nt all that easy but how well can you play simple music. that is a good punk song that conveys that general teen angst while hes playing the bass line and singing it all, something that i still can do (i tried for a month once and got tired and quit). not all punk is just root chords and sneers like it used to be. many punklines have become more melodic and supportive from just roots. think aboot it. *SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL PUNK BAND*

I think this says it all - come back when you've "tried" for 20 years and we might take some notice!

I have to disagree with this, I like Blink and I also like N'Sync. And the musicianship in N'Sync is far better than that of Blink 182. The songs are definatly more structured and have much more complex bass lines than Blink 182 could ever hope to have. I think most people tend to forget that there is a REAL band playing behind N'Sync and the other boy bands. As for telling how good a band is by seeing them live, I can say this, Ive seen Both of them Live and I still think N'Sync burys them musically and even vocally.

No.. N'Sync doesn't bury anyone musically, because all they do is sing. They are not musicians. Their backing band doesn't count. You think any of the prepubescent girls that buy this fluff crap even know they have a backing band? Who even writes N'Sync's songs? I mean, good for them for making tons of money, but Blink 182 is a BAND. The fact that N'Sync is referred to as a "boy band" pisses me off. Bands plays instruments. N'Sync is a group. I'm sure them and the Backstreet Boys fancy themselves as the modern-day 4 Tops or Spinners or something.. what a joke.

You know, I just realized something. In saying that N'Sync's backing band doesn't count, and later mentioning the 4 Tops and Spinners, I might have inadvertently soiled the memory of the great Motown session players. Those guys were unknowns too, and didn't get credit or name recognition until years later. I seriously doubt, though, that there are any James Jamersons or Benny Benjamins in the backing bands of today's boy groups. Just wanted to clear that up.

Actually I think you're wrong there - while I don't like the music as such, I know that some of the "session" players who play behind girl/boy bands in teh UK are seriously good players - there's a guy in the UK called Freddie Thompson - I think (not absolutely sure about the name) who plays a 6-string Warwick with some of these bands and he is a very good bassplayer. Whereas with a lot of the "real" bands I see now, the bassplayers are often just posers who happen to know the lead singer so got into the band although they couldn't really play.

When I was 18/19 I really "dissed" Motown as all the wimps and losers liked this stuff and all my friends were into Led Zep, Black Sabbath etc. It's only now that I don't bow to "peer pressure" that I can look back and really appreciate the musicianship that went into it - I mean I really hate the Spice Girls "concept" but one or two of the basslines are pretty good! ;)

That's a good point, Bruce. It's just hard for me to imagine all these kids listening to Limp Bizkit these days, looking back 20 years from now and saying, "Ya know, N'Sync was great. I never gave them their due."
The fact remains that as with Motown, the bands that play behind groups like N'Sync are not given credit. But, they are getting paid nicely.. unlike the Funk Brothers. I still say no one in N'Sync's backing band will ever be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I remember seeing nsync back in the early 90's at a place called Pleasure Island, in the Orlando area and low and behold what were they doing, playing their own instraments...my god imagine that. They are one of the few if not the only "boy band" that actually put themselves together and went out seeking a recording deal too. To be honest with you, I dont give a damn weather the kids that buy the cd's know if they have a backing band or not, I I know they have one, and thats one of the things I like about them. But to answer your question I do think the kids know their is a backing band behind them. I know that JC Chasez had a hand in writing a few of the songs on the NO Strings Attached cd. As to what ones Id have to get out the sleeve and read it again. God I know way too much about these guys. Dont get me wrong I see your point here too, and in part I agree with it, but if ya wanna just compare vocals then they have blink beat hands down...thats just my opinion on the vocal issue, the rest about them playing there own stuff b4 they got famous is not.

thats all i was tryin to say Bruce. i just happen to like the boy bands too...well not the spice girls tho.

N'Sync are vary talented singers, but they fit a formula. They don't write songs to express anything, they write songs that will make people want to buy their product, and that is why there are so many boy and girl groups like that, like 98º and Backstreet Boys, etc. They are all very good singers, but to the young preteen girl it's not about the lyrics, it's about the image and possibly the beat or chorus or something like that. Blink 182 do write their own songs and play their own instruments, and I'm glad to see that you can still have a "band" and be successful at the same time, and it's not worth it do badmouth them, cuz they are playing gigs and making a nice living off of what they do, I only wish I could do something I love like playing music for a living.

So your saying singers are not musicians if
they dont play an instrument?

I know what your trying to say but
thats kind of silly.
See Bassline1414's post.
Singers are musicians, the human voice is an instrument, but we're talking about 5 singers who are referred to as a boy BAND. They are not a band.
