Why Modern Music Is Awful

Prolly for the same reason Somebody Marsalis says jazz stinks: the musicians suck.
I thought that was Everybody Marsalis.
I dare you to try and listen to the entire guitar solo on this ancient music from 1966.
I do not think the music of today is all that bad. If it is catchy and you can dance to it then it is not all bad. It serves its purpose. I think there is just not enough variety. That is not the artists fault but the money backing them. They want the best return on their investment. Again not a bad thing just a sign of the times.

I didn't watch the video, but will say that I think Miley Cyrus has a terrific voice. I'm not into her music that much, but I appreciate her talent.

That was the whole point. Virtually any new music is much better than this piece of crap. It is really hard to tell exactly when the guitar solo starts and when it ends. It is impossible to deduce what he was thinking.

I think you're missing the OP's point. It's not that all music made in the last __insert arbitrary number here that makes it "modern"__ years is terrible.
I think that the music that the largest (and arguably most powerful) labels/companies push these days is music that is devoid of much creative substance. And that's not an accident.
It's also their right to push whatever music they wish, since profit is the only goal.
But objectively speaking, pop music that is pushed by the majors is quite watered down as compared to music from 50 years ago. It's just a sign of the changing priorities of everyone involved, from "musician" (or more accurately, singer), to label/management, to consumer.

I'm pretty sure J.S. Bach had the same complaints in 1750. Music evolves. That doesn't mean you have to like it, but you cannot deny it either. Some music that evolves isn't as good as some other. That's fine. We remember the great ones over time. While bad music will always be created, the craptastic music of today will eventually be forgotten and only the exceptional music of today will be remembered. The bright spot about bad modern music is that those that actually care about making good music learn from these songs and create better music. We've all said to ourselves "I'd never do that" or "I can do better" after hearing some bad song. That is learning from others and moving the quality of music forward (hopefully). However, we also forget that some of these bad songs are done on purpose as a lark or parody or sarcastically. They may be bad, but they are bad on purpose and eventually will find their nitch. Some even become famous for them and their bad songs become "popular" for it.
I'm a music critic, just as most people who have an opinion on music would be.
I think a lot of what's considered 'modern music' has a lot of chaff left in with the wheat. That said, I think it's great that mass communication and social media has democratized available music for anyone who wants to share their stuff.
I will say the over use of that tired old chord progression really drills a hole in my head.
