Why no straplocks?

Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt of Green Day were the first dudes I saw duct taping their straps to their guitars. Thought it was crazy then, think it's crazy now, but hey, they're not my basses 
With recessed straps, if you forget your strap the same thing happens that would happen if you forget any crucial element and had no backup and can't borrow a replacement... you're screwed

Moral: don't forget your strap (or anything else you'll need). I use gigbags and since I know some of my basses have recessed Dunlops I keep extra strap hardware with the tools I always carry. I also keep a fabric straps with Dunlop hardware that takes up very little space in the bags. Since I have so many Dunlop installs I also keep straps in all of my vehicles. If I somehow still end up losing all of these, I probably subconsciously wanted to sit down anyway.

This. I've seen it a lot, and just truly hate it for me personally.
I try to use strap locks, but even with all of my stage antics, I've never lost a bass on stage, straplocks or not. The last bass I had, the screw that held the straplocks in came loose during a practice so even then, it's not fool proof, either way.
Yep, straplocks are definitely not foolproof. I've pulled many a straplock right out. Got to the point where I started putting them in with epoxy.
Dual design dunlops on all my keepers. One strap for all my basses. Like a hardcase I feel if the instrument is worth keeping, it is worth protecting a bit.

A local player had his strap duct taped to his bass, and as he was jumping around onstage his strap ripped.
Bass crashed to the floor.So can't win for loose either way.
+1 Two of my go to basses have 3" X 3/8" lag bolts and the strap permanently attached. Don't laugh- the straps are auto seat belts and they are attached to some pretty pricey axes.
Some basses already come with straplocks of some sort. I know the Laklands do. Mine did. But I use my strap the conventional way. I have a P-Bass I got from a TB member and it already had straplocks on it. My Fender Jazz does not have them. Been playing since the early 70's and have never had an incident. None of my previous basses had straplocks. I don't find it necessary to install them.

I'm with the Dunlop Dual-Design crowd. I have one Levy's strap with the locks installed, and I use it for all of my basses. As soon as I get a bass, I buy just the buttons, which can usually be had for about five bucks a pair, so the I don't really get the 'waste of money' argument. You can't even get a Big Mac for $5.

They never come loose because I find a good, long, quality screw and lube it up, so I can get it in there good and tight.
My basses aren't particularly expensive, but they're all important enough to me to keep them as safe as I can. Can Straploks fail? Sure...but less likely than without.

Where were you able to find just the bass bits for Dunlop DD's? I have found Schaller ones, but can never find the Dunlops (I end up buying the whole system.)

Yes, All Parts sells Dunlop replacement body buttons w/screws sets for like 5-6 bucks per pair. They even sell a bag of 20 if you need that many.
Meh--I have a planet waves padded strap. The thing is such a bugger to get on the bass that I know it is never coming off.....For me strap locks would be more for not having to figit getting the strap on for 30 seconds. Been playing since 95 and never dropped. But to each their own
I used to use Schaller strap locks but they kept popping off, so I switched to Dunlops and they always work.
I disagree. Like I said, I've been playing a long time and have had certain basses for as long as 10 years and have never had a failure! Strap buttons still tight as the day I got the basses!
