Not a great pic, but those red things on the strap ends are fender washers. Way better than straplocks imo, and they cost me about a dime a piece.

Wrong - but honestly, I don't really care what other people do with their instruments... I've seen enough basses and guitars go crashing to the ground over the years that I don't mind spending $15 to insure that it won't happen to mine...

I did likewise, back when I was bashing a Stratocaster all over the stage. But now that I don't do that anymore, the need for those is also gone.
You can just buy the button half. Costs about $4 retail.

On another note, I do like the look of the recessed strap lock systems. I don't like the look of the protruding ones. Just seems the wood surrounding them would fatigue at some point. Probably not but I don't like that look.
Has no one tried this idea? Cut a circle out of leather and punch a hole on the middle. Then put it on over the strap. Easy and cheap, if not free! 
wow, each time there is a thread about straplocks, the recurring themes come back: Grostch, schaller vs dunlop, no locks vs some kind of locks vs permanent locks. You guys are worse than guitar players 
I find that in my case - being all of 5'-7" - that I tend to push the bass down towards my hip so that I can work my way around the neck. If the bass has a smaller body or top horn, then it's not difficult to understand the outwards strain that is put on the strap. Without straplocks, it's a frequent occurrence for the strap to pull off even without stage theatrics. It's also more likely to happen on basses where the bridge is seated further towards the neck, thereby pushing the entire neck further away from the body. Basses where the bridge is almost at the edge of the body work better for me, as the neck is then that much closer and more easily reached with my shorter arms.

I don't know why some of you don't just post, "If you don't do exactly what I do, you're an idiot." It's obvious that's what you're thinking. I am so gosh darn sick of that stupid mentality on Talkbass. It's really kind of sad, actually. The fact that so many of you feel the need to put down everyone who doesn't think as you do says a lot more about you than it does about them. I recommend psychological help before you let it drive you insane.
I tend to play in hard rock/metal bands that are high energy - lots of stage movement, besides throwing your guitar or bass around a fair amount... In short: rockin out - HARD!!!

I use Schaller myself.
Properly installed the wood doesn't fatigue either way. the recessed stay rock solid with a properly sized hole... zero room for movement. My Fodera has a 20 year old set and the only way the strap is coming off is when I choose to take it off.
