Why play a 6 string?

I might sound anti 6 string but I play the 6 string bass exclusively. If you want a 6 string bass then by all means get one, just play it like I do (since clearly I'm a douchebag).

Wow, a lot of elitists here. Maybe people need to stop worrying about what they think is "correct" and "should be" ... because that's exactly what this guy's band is doing too.

Now then - I say if you can make it work and you like the sound, go for it. You want to play slap bass in a rock band? Go for it. I'm sure if people listened to their stuck up bands (or stuck up forum goers) all the time, some of the greats would have never become "the greats".

If you can pull it off, don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it because they say you're not supposed to or they don't want you to. Proove to your band that you've got the chops to play a 6'er and go for it.

Based on what evidence? So I suppose the guitar players six strings have bad intonation?

Let's look at the rest of the nonsense:

• heavier - depends on the bass
• wider neck makes handling harder - depends on the bass
• string spacing is narrower ( i do do alot of slap) - depends on the bass.. Claypool slaps on a six.
• they say bass doesn't need to go that high - six string basses don't go that high. My five string is only 4 notes short of a six, but then I have 28 frets. It's more about playing across the strings.
• bass solos sound bad - And so do many guitar solos.

You can counter by telling the guitar player you don't like his clothes or haircut.

I was always the leader/main song writer of my bands, so they couldn't get away with crap like that, plus I usually could outplay the guitar player.. that puts them in their place!
