Why So Many People Playing Fender Basses?

The sound of a P-bass (and in some circles, a J-bass) has a tone that to me just "sits in the mix" of of most hard rock and punk recordings.
I have one, and love it for that kind of thing.
My other bass (Yamaha) has a sound similar to that of a Ricky and Jazz- but that's another story (and it works well for certain things too!).

Why So Many People Playing Fender Bass's ?

You are WAY off. Change is scary to MOST people.
There's nothing wrong with Fender.
But to answer the question, JRA has part of the answer. People also buy Fender 'cause other people buy Fender (AKA the "sheep effect", vehemently denied by all Fender owner hence proving the point). But in my opinion, the number 1 reason is people are lazy and Fender's are easily available pretty much everywhere.
First off, if someone can't get a good sound out of a Fender or ANY bass, especially with all the tools at our disposal--amp settings, EQ, vol/tone knobs, effects pedals, string swaps, not to mention technique--right hand placement, adjusting attack, etc., etc., then the "problem" shouldn't be blamed on the bass.
Secondly, you are asserting that all those countless recordings made with Fender basses going back to 1951...all those sessions, live shows where a Fender bass was being utilized...all those iconic Fender players--none of those sounds or bassists had "strong character?"
I believe the majority of people here would take issue with that statement.
It is good, though, that there are so many different non-Fender options.
Just because Fenders are great, classic instruments (and still the industry standard) doesn't mean other basses aren't also great.
Among other things, they look right and they sound right - to me and to a lot of other people.
Of course there are other basses that look good and sound good too in their own ways. Everybody doesn’t have to play a Fender, but they really got something right, at least for the styles of music I like (not to mention a number of styles I don’t like!).
