Just venting. Why, when practice is set for say, tonight, does ONE person, and always the SAME person, text TODAY to see if practice is still on? Anal? I guess, but is there another explanation?

Why Text every freakin' time to ask "Is practice still on for tonight?"

I would think the band leader would do the reminding.
Probably past experience. Musicians tend to be flakes who cancel things last minute. Maybe bring it up at next rehearsal: "Guys, we are lucky to be in a band where everyone is dependable. We all show up at set rehearsal times and if there is a change it will be communicated promptly. There is no need to send messages checking if rehearsal has been cancelled." IF that is all true.
It's the drummer, isn't it?

Because they don't want to practice, or haven't done their home work, or don't want to do them.

or they've been burned by bands that canceled practice frequently and without much notice.

Just figuring out a frigging day for us to practice has become an issue. I can't even count how many emails/messages it took for our band to agree on a day. It just seems to get worse as we get older. LOL
It's a ginormous PITA to break down the kit and load 'em up to find out someone flaked....again!

My rant is that my jam/band got together last night after several weeks of canceling etc. I host so that easy but the other guys didnt have any songs to call. Stuff we've done a million times. Just sort of looked at me to come up with a plan. Like didn't you think of any of the songs we used to play? I dont wanna make all the decisions here. And it's sloppy and rushed but I work on my ear skills.
Well, there are people in the band I play in who have actual lives, and have alternative activities as backups for their evenings. Gotta allow for that. But it is kinda funny--we have a band calendar on the web, and it's always updating, and sends us messages--and some of us still send texts ("Are we on?"). There's just no accounting for it. I don't have "a life" (no kids, retired) so it really doesn't matter to me.
I have a 1 hour 15 minute drive, one way, in rush hour to get to my rehearsal.

Agreed.
Luckily our BL will send out the reminder almost every time. If not, one of us will ask just to confirm.

If the choice is between a person who overcommunicates vs one who undercommunicates, I'd almost always take the former.
There are many reasons why someone would want to verify an activity is still going to happen, the day of the activity. My band all verifies the day of that we're good to go, and my Dungeons and Dragons group also verifies the day of that we're all good to go. It sucks to find out last minute that someone didn't bother to mention that they couldn't make it.
I like @SoCal80s suggestion, about having a quick group speech confirming everyone is on the same page.

Yes, but the reasons you ask can be divulged because they are understandable.
If someone knows he asks for reasons that are detrimental to the band, then he will hide and avoid ruining the band motivation.
Also this seems contagious, sometime it's like some are hoping that somebody bails before them, so they can then not be the first one to bail, and can have an excuse like "it's not worth playing if there is no keys".

But I rarely heard "ho are you sure there is a rehearsal ? Because I really want to play".
It's a given that my band always practices at the drummer's house at 6:00 on Friday evenings.
The drummer will always check in with us on a group text during the day on Friday. I don't mind it at all.
