Why the GLX hate?

I just got a GK 115 GLX to go with my 210 GLX. I honestly don't have any issue with the sound quality out of them. They have some really nice punch out of them and some really nice, warm low end thanks to my new 115. For the price I honestly don't see what the big problem is. They certainly are much MUCH better than the BLX series.

By the way, I have an SWR 350X amp behind them.

As a former owner (410 GLX), here is my take: they aren't bad cabs but they certainly aren't great cabs.

I think the gripe you will here from most is 1) they are very heavy cabs and 2) you can get cabs that are lighter and arguably sound better for the same money. I tend to agree with this assessment.

But really, the bottom line is: if it sounds good to you then it is good. Rock what you like and forget the naysayers.

I feel what you're saying about not caring what others feel, but it sounds to me like a lot of people really hate these things. I'm just trying to get their take on it. And the fact that the 115 is now discontinued is one of the main reasons for my intrigue

You know what? This is the same old tired whiney thread that always gets posted by somebody who wants to feel good about their low-budget gear. For as long as there have been material possessions, there has been envy of those possessions, and there has been elitism, class divisions, castes, and poor people just trying to get by. The head honcho caveman got the nice thick bear-fur coat, and the lower-caste scrub has to make do with a coat made of leaves and dung. You know what that lower-caste scrub did?



He invented the internet, so he could post a thread asking "why all the leaf-and-dung hate?"



For the record, I love cheap gear too. I'm just irked by the "why all the XYZ hate" threads.

Never knew such a lack of knowledge of history and sociology could exist...LOL

I'll tell you what, if you judge your gear by what people say on this (or any) forum, you are doing it wrong. Plenty of players get along every night playing gear they love. It's one of two things happening:

1. Ignorance is bliss
Or
2. Bliss is personal experience combined with lack of influence.

Either way you are better off playing what you like.

Quick hijack:

I need an amp to keep at my parent's place (6 hours away from me) because I play in so many bands around the state and am tired of always lug around my RB rig to all the different practice spots. I don't feel like spending huge amounts of money just to keep an amp in one spot (probably at my parent's). Should I go for the GLX, or is it a waste of money?

It's pretty cheap, but as said before, it is pretty heavy. I personally like the tone of the 210, but the 115 adds a nice amount of low end.
You should try it first, it's really a preference thing.
What style of music?

I've tried the cabs, not too shabby for the price (to my ears in GC), haven't found the head to try out.

I play pretty much everything. I'm in a big band at school, a country band, a reggae band, and a punk band. But I go to college 6 hours away from my hometown, where some of my gigs are. I'd probably just leave the GLX (if I get it) down in my hometown and use my regular rig up at school and at bigger gigs.

They aren't bad cabs at all...just like any piece of equipment, it will have its drawbacks


having been the previous owner of the exact same cab setup that you have, I can say this about them:

1) They were heavy....very heavy

2) For how heavy they were, they didn't handle a massive amount of wattage

3) Some people liked that they had no horns, i kinda like having the option of one...so that wasn't really a minus for me, just something I would have liked to have available to me.



For the price, they are certainly good cabs. When you're looking to upgrade though, I would suggest some Avatar cabs, they're priced right and sound phenomenal. (if you couldnt tell, thats what I upgraded to lol)

Ask yourself this, why did I get these cabs ? am I happy with the sound, are they what I really wanted and if you say yes then don't listen to anybody else. You got them because you like them and that what matter.

I got gear that I like and only I like so I don't care what anybody else think of it.

You don't gear just please others or because it looks cool. Remember it your tools in this business.

Has anyone mentioned that they are super heavy and highly prone to blowing drivers? :P

I don't like them because if you spent the same money on superior cabinets you could get the same performance per dollar and not break your back.

In my experience a GK Neo 4x10 will outperform a GLX 4x10 + 1x15 stack for less than half the weight and right about the same price point.

They are heavey because they are way bigger than most of the other 115s, so tuned lower, I think. I have been eyeing those cabs for a couple of months. Seems like the biggest 115 except for the peavey tvx115. Both priced about the same.

Why all the hate for the glx115? I was thinking about buying one, or building a cab of similar dimensions with a 4ohm neo 15" Do they have more low end than most 115s and just have problems with the driver? Any body want to give theirs away?
