What made you love the bass? I remember the first time i plugged one in and heard those low tones, it was for me. The electric guitar just couldn't live up to it. Anyone want to share there story?

Why we love playing bass.

Like a lot of us, it was the lack of bassists around when I first started to play. I do play guitar as well but the bass tends to pay off better because there still a lack of competent bassists around, especially those who can sing and front a band. You can usually find work if you want it.
It just fell into my lap, kinda. Now I enjoy holding down the low end, there's something pretty magical about doing it that I love. Granted, I'm a somewhat competent guitar player now that I've gotten into writing my own material but I go ballistic on the bass lines

When I was a kid I got started on bass and drums at the same time. I was a better drummer, but to me the two instruments are so perfectly linked (if done well) that playing both made sense to me. I'm working hard on becoming a skilled bassist now.

My very first step in Music were playin' guitar (which I still do, mostly when on my own, or for my wife, who doesn't understand the bass)
My very first step in band was as Lead singer (which I still do, spare time, in a band playin' all round rock covers, when the song is heavy)
But I switched to the bass very early in the past:
As the two TBers above, certainly 'cause I'm maybe not that proficient on a guitar (I'm way better on my basses) and because there's always lack of good bassists around. Especially if asked to sing and to bring "stage presence".

I come from a small town, (in South Dakota) and i think you could count the bassists on your fingers
I like being the tone in the band that makes everyone else (drummer and guitarist included) scared for their lives. I play metal and sometimes people are like "wow you're really good" and I'm not any better than other bassists, I just make sure I'm heard. I love being the odd guy out.
I remember practicing in my old apartment, the neighbors said they didn't hear me play...they felt it

I th ink it's both that the low notes feel so cool and that for me it requires less eye/hand dexterity and is a bit more forgiving. I like that even if all i can manage on a particular song is mostly root notes as long as i'm on the beat i'm making a contribution that works in a band setting...i may not be able to recognizably play the song solo but I'm part of the whole thing when it comes together.
Like most I started out on guitar when I was younger. When I formed/joined my first band with friends they did not have a bassist so I started playing bass and the rest is history. I ended up sticking with it and I still today play both guitar and bass and love them both.
I only ever wanted to play bass both my older brothers play bass.because of them bass is what I payed attention to,I wanted to groove like them and at the same time be different from them.
I just love holding the bottom and staying in the background. I'm a real chill guy, so playing the bass made sence to me
