Why?

I have been sitting around letting some extra money coming my way burn a hole in my pockets thinking about what I can buy, and now I am thinking why? I could use a fretless upgrade, but I don’t need one. I certainly do not need another fretted bass. Why do I always want something else?
Good question. Why do you think you always want something else?

Here are a few possibilities:

1a) It's easier to buy something new than to invest yourself into what you already have (issues with commitment)
1b) It's easier to buy something new than to invest yourself into what you already have (lack of confidence about your playing, so you cast shiftlessly about)
2) We live in a consumerist society, and our economy thrives on the indiscriminate purchase. You're doing your part by taking the depreciation hit.
3) You really do need another bass.

It's science.
We live by the rule of "b = n + 1".
"b" equals the perfect number of basses to have.
"n" equals the number of basses we actually have.

My partner is going abroad for a month, so they might notice a Guild Starfire when they get home

Mmmm.....

ahhhh...

well...

er....

Nope, can't do it. I would be violating forum rules. Maybe you need to take up meditation? I think there's a thread on that. :D

What is this GAS everyone is mentioning? I'm sure it's something simple but I'm at a loss. While we're at it, I want to get a 5 string fretless. It's just for playing around with at the house and doing some recording there probably. I'm nearly 59 with pretty bad arthritis in my feet so I highly doubt I'll ever be on a stage again. Any recomendations? Something under a thousand.

Don' know if it's been said yet, buuut...why not? If you can do it, eh, go ahead...wishful thinking can be pampered.

Human Nature. " We want it all. And we want it now." Recent generations are used to having everything they want as opposed to generations in the past who had to work and strive to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. The unexpected income is burning a hole in your pocket because you're assuming that it won't be needed for the future and or you feel you deserve it.
With eleven keeper bases and four great amps I'm not preaching but I'm more concerned with generating revenue with those tools (which has provided a good income to date), rather than trying to fill up rooms to the ceiling with gear that validate multiple 7 Deadly Sins. BHPD isn't necessarily a bad thing so knock yourself out. There are still a couple on my bucket list but all my purchases have been Investments and well-thought-out. Maturity tends to modify priorities. Color me Buddhist LOL.
Edit. The recent pandemic has placed much unexpected income at my disposal and virtual every penny has gone into the business account. This isn't over.

If you’re serious, have I got a lead for you. How about a Ricky, fret less Blueboy, 2004, COTY, absolutely perfect condition in its original case with all the stuff, AND it’s in St Louis area. Message me if this scratches your itch. Doc Brown.

GAS is "gear (or 'guitar', depending on who you ask) acquisition syndrome"...every musician's friend...

I'm 65 and now that I'm retired and finally at a stage in life where there's a bit of disposable income in my pocket, I've gone nuts buying things I couldn't afford in my salad days.Back in my heavy gigging days I had responsibilities that prevented me from owning the things I craved. Now I'm sitting in my man cave surrounded by slews of basses, amps and effects. All dressed up with nowhere to go.Life's cruel.

I’ve been buying and selling this stuff for 48 years now. At least a few hundred thousand dollars. I played drums. As the drummer it’s easier to have practice at your house. It’s also easier to own the PA. And lights. And mics and drums and cymbals and boards and recording boards and stands and cables and geez. Always bought guitars and basses (60 of them now) and tried to learn them. And amps and straps and stands and pedals and man pedals are rabbit hole that’s hard to dig out of! I have played only bass for 3 years now. Really digging in. I can’t physically play the drums anymore and have always loved the bass. I’m kicking myself for not sticking with just the bass when I acquired my first one 46 years ago. It’s where I’ve belonged all along. I have had a home studio since some of the earliest versions in the mid 80s and all the gear that goes with home studios ughh. I don’t earn money doing this. It’s just a great hobby. Met some great musicians with a similar passion and had some great times. What else would I spend it on? I’m semi retired now. What a perfect hobby. All that said. I’m getting near the end. I think I’m running out of “GAS.” In my last quest for another acoustic nothing was satisfying for me so after 6 months of looking I gave up. I’m on a quest for a P- Bass now and purchased 3 that I returned. Some expensive ones too. Just didn’t float my boat. Recently I’ve been looking for a new combo amp. I’ve purchased two and sent them back. Not up to snuff. So I’m getting more picky. First they don’t make stuff like they used to. Second my standards are higher. Third maybe I’ve bought it all and I’m at the end of the yellow brick road and there’s nothing left to buy. The upside to that is it leaves me more time to just play. I wish all you young people a happy quest. I would just say this. When you get GAS and the thought occurs to you, “do I really need this?” Just wait. Just a few days. Usually the GAS will go away.

(...right there with you, Bro!) Working on guitar kits and carcasses, bought a couple reasonably priced pieces, a couple of turntables, a few records, etc....life is good...aaaand nowhere to use 'em...except the record-stuff...

You suffer from the same affliction I do.. BHPD( bass hoarding personality disorder). I have 39 basses, am building a fretless and just found an extremely rare Yamaha 85 BB1300 for sale that is giving me sleepless nights.. pills don't work they just make it worse.
