Why?

IMO, one is either impulsive and must have the new shiny thing as soon as it hits the market,
or it's more of a complicated relationship with GAS.
My method, which is in a trial stage at present has been this:
First of all, I went through every bit of gear I own and made sure I have 'all I need' in that aspect. After a complicated process, I came up with a list of things.
1. a P bass
2. a J bass
3. an active dual Humbucker bass.
also,
1. a 4 string
2. a 5 string
3. a 6 string
(I managed to pull this off with only three basses)
Concering amplification:
I have two cabinets that are small and light enough to work for home practice and acoustic sessions, yet powerful enough to do outdoor rock gigs at full blast, plus two amp heads to drive these cabinets.
And the misc. stuff:
A pedalboard that is rigged to do 'my' sound, a spare pedalboard with tuner and PSU mounted plus a few spare pedals, so I can throw something on there in a pinch.
A Headrush Gigboard.
A ton of cables, accessories, stands, straps ...
Proper means of transportation (bags, cases etc.)

In theory, this is enough to last me a lifetime - and there is enough redundancy. Any bit of my gear may break on a Sunday afternoon and I'll be able to play the gig that's scheduled for the evening.
I know that it's totally possible for me to reach a new level of playing and my preferences might shift enough so the gear that is 100% ideal for me at the moment might become less ideal in favor of other things - and that might be the moment where GAS finds a gap to wedge its ugly fangs in.
But for the time being, I do the same you do, Dr. Cheese. I see a new shiny thing, I drool a bit from the corner of my mouth and then I ask myself if I really NEED that.
I wait a day and usually, the itch is gone.

I have all of those things too, I could have written that post just like you did. The odd thing is that lately I've been picking up my 4 string PJ a lot. Totally hot rodded and it's a beast but it's still just a four string PJ.
And I'm coming up with some really creative stuff on it not come out of me on any of my other basses and I really like the sound. It makes me play differently.
And I do have killer basses 4-string 5-string 6-string, you name it. But the P is the one that I keep picking up these days. Maybe it's because that's what I started on when I first heard Paul Jackson play bass with Herbie.
No I'm keeping my gas totally in check.
Oh I just got a set of two matching black milk crates for my to Avatar single 12 speaker cabinets.
Do milk crates count?

Everyone seems to love their 2x10” cabs. Am I the only one who still loves their 15” cabs?
Back in the 70s I had a band mate who had a Traynor Mono Block B (400 watt head) with the matching cab. That cabinet was dual front facing ports, a 20” speaker facing towards the back coming out of the scoops and the baffle between the two scoops had twin 8” speakers (or was it twin 6” I forget it was the 70s and there were a lot of drugs around) anyway till this day never heard anything as good as that cab/head combo. Of course it weighed a million pounds but I’m just saying. I still prefer what a 15” speaker can do…..

yeah i mean they sold me on the Rumble 500 2x10" over the 200 1x15" but it was a hard sell.. I tested it in shop for 45mins, i swear the sales peeps were bettin on if i would actually buy anything. thing was, it played really well and what sold me on the 2x10" was that i needed an amp that day and they didn't have the 1x15" hahaha.. so i never got to compare them..

the biggest thing i have to say is that although i'll always prefer 15", i have only really played Altec-Lansing ER15s which are really f'n good... so... i've never tried 10" vs 15" pound for pound in quality.. i did say i was going to shoot out my two rigs today but ended up catchin up on some zzz's. stay tuned (or detuned) and i'll setup tonight for a run tomorrow after work

Do milk crates count??! As we say down here in the antipodes; “Is the Pope a Catholic?”

Last year, due to pandemic-induced insanity, I sold my #2. I later realized I really liked it, and after several attempts never bonded with the replacement.

So now I’ve got gig money coming in and I’ve got an itchy trigger finger. I finally pulled said trigger this week; something very close to my old #2 and I’m 99% confident this will scratch the itch.

It’s not really a need now is it? I have a lovely #1. But as long as I’m in the black and having fun, who cares? I used to beat myself up for wanting stuff, but now I’m trying the “life’s short, enjoy the ride” mentality.
It’s funny that this thread is popping up again, because some 18 months later I’ve made a 180 on my stance.

I’ve been getting into guitar lately and bought a bunch of gear for that new hobby. I’ve also quit gigging on bass, which dried up the “fun money” that was rolling in.

As I looked at the great bass and guitar gear in the house, and stared deep into the rabbit hole of guitar gear I could fall into, I’ve had some interesting conclusions: I can never try everything. I have great gear. All that’s left to do at this point is improve as a player.

:)
