Just goes to show that fast is not necessarily good. I couldn't have played anything close to this for about 2 decades, but I didn't hear or feel anything that could be used on anything other than a showoff video like this.
what are you using for monitoring? the bass isn't louder than the entire backing track, but it's certainly louder than where you might put the bass in a mix. i have no problem hearing it clearly on my cheap-o computer speakers (they do have a tiny little subwoofer but still).
I thought it sounded pretty great, for whatever it was. Hated the backing track, or perhaps a better way to say it was that a “less busy / prominent” backing track might have worked better. Bass sounded excellent.
The playing was impressive; BUT, sounded rather mechanical. Bop tunes were kind of the thrash punk of Jazz, with insane tempos. But, one still should play the lines with more feel; and, as previously noted, playing something of your own is part of the shtick. Here is one reference for doin it right.

I'm listening through a set of Beats headphones on my laptop. I can hear what he is playing but as for the actual tone of the bass, it would be hard to discern any particular qualities. As for the performance, the kid definitely has put in some time memorizing it and has some fast chops.
Guy has pretty good facility, better than mine anyways.

I'm listening through studio monitors and it sounds audible to me.

I my version of Donna Lee I use all whole notes. Unfortunately, it takes about 2 and a half days to complete.
Those instruments are known for that, but if that is a flaw it’s one that has been overcome many times in spectacular fashion.
