Why?

I though I had YT set for 1.25x or 1.5x playback speed

I am listening on studio monitors with a subwoofer and I can hear the bass fine, Deep and clacky. Not much mids.

Well,
For me at least, Donna Lee on the original Jaco Pastorius album was pretty astounding at the time, but Continuum was more artistic and musically stunning. I had the pleasure of hearing Oteil Burbage live last weekend on Music at the Intersection here in St. Louis. His soloing and playing
while paying homage to Jaco are
inspired, melodic and artistic. We all learn on the shoulders of those who came before. Transcribing a solo as difficult as Donna Lee is definitely an accomplishment, putting it up on YouTube for all to admire is something else. Just my take.

I listened through a proper stereo and I can hear the bass. not buried. I think you are used to hearing Stanley Clark who uses guitar amps like Fender Twin or Roland JC-120 along with a bass amp

This is a perfect example of why I don’t generally post music/videos! I appreciate and respect the facility of the player, and I’d love to hear some original music using those techniques. But I never would have posted it for general internet consumption. That’s what Dropbox is for.

I admire the good Dr’s ability to present in a much more accessible and non-pretentious manner.

The playing is great from a technical perspective. Not really a good musical piece at that tempo but that’s probably not what the guy was going for. At the risk of blasphemy I’ve never really liked the sound of Alembics anyway. I think that piece would sound better if played on a Squire Jazz bass, although he might not be able to pull off that tempo on a 34 inch scale bass.

I would not judge anyone harshly for trying, he seems to have the notes under his fingers. Maybe had he slowed the tempo and drop the backing track in the mix to show what he has accomplish would have been a benefit to show his ability to play the piece imo.

I could learn to walk all the way around the block on my fingertips. It would be very hard. Possibly no one else would be able to do it, I'd be in rarefied air. But what purpose would it serve, and who would really care if I could do it.

NHOP was pretty astounding. To play those tempos you have so sacrifice some tone quality because the strings are lower.

The bass is perfectly audible, not my cup of tea tone (and it's sloppy), but definitely audible. Not great but still better than boomers recording their "awesome bass tone" with their phones.

Poor analogy. Having the technique to play something musically easily transfers to other musical endeavors, and gives more options and tools to the performer.
