Will Ampeg ever make a Micro?

Loud has extensive experience in Class D amp design and implementation. They own Mackie, EAW, and Martin Audio so Ampeg has a lot to draw on for their designs.

It makes sense that Ampeg will move into light weight micro amps in the future. They have yet to release a Heritage SVT-VR. Otherwise, the tube amp bases are pretty well covered. The solid state PF line is due for a makeover, perhaps updating the 350 and adding a higher (1000W+) powered unit.

Call me shallow, but I'm not gigging with those metal-grilled, silvery, chrome-y lame looking rigs.

Remember when cell phones were the size of a suitcase? Then eventually they were the size of a postage stamp. Now they are the size of tablets and you can't even put them in your pocket anymore.

Anywho my current rig is a PF-350 on top of an SVT-210AV. It's under 40 pounds total. I consider that micro enough for me.

Ampeg. I only went another way when it seemed like their offerings hadn't "improved" in the size and weight department compared to other companies.

I'm in a similar spot. What did you end up buying?

Don't know if it has come up or not (too much fodder to read through), class D is not the biggest reason for weight savings. Difference between a 500 watt class G/H amp module and the same rated class D module is at best 10%. Class D output design is not where the bulk of weight savings come from.

Ended up with the GK MBF800. It's a little bigger than I was wanting, but it has a great sound and some really cool features that the Aggie didn't have. I'd recommend it.

To me it seems logical that all major manufacturers have or will weigh their options in micros considering the success of the concept for so many. SWR seemed to have just been too early with theirs, or at least trying too late in their decline to have a couple units bring them back.

I'd bet Ampeg guys have already mocked up or even prototyped out a true micro, and it's making its way through the bean counters and execs' camps as we speak. Unless I have heard wrong, anything happening now with the itty-bitty high power amps is really coming down to what prices makers can negotiate with Bang & Olufsen, and if they can hit a reasonable cost per unit.

My money is on a true micro by Winter NAMM 2017 by Ampeg.

It may not outsell PF's or SVT's but it'll move. Especially if they can squish a convincing Ampeg voice in there.

I just played the PF500 at the local GC. It didn't really float my boat. Staying with my TH500 for now. Maybe I'll add outboard compression and call it a day.

I've got a Micro VT with the 2x10 AVs. What a sound with my Squier P/J.
With the 2 cabs stacked they are quite loud-OK, not gigged.
I do feel that Ampeg missed a trick by not offering a 500 or 800W version of this amp.
I love my GB Shuttle 9.2 but the VT brings out the beast in me.
I did connect the VT up to the Shuttle and my Focus 4x10 and that was sonic heaven.
Ampeg sound with GB power. Nice.

My money is on an Ampeg version of the Reddi D.I. as the tube version of the earlier introduced d.i.
why? Because they just introduced two more than anticipated, highly successful Portaflex tube amps.
So they will skip at least one year in amps, is my guess.
Then after that, in 2018 they might introduce the micro micro and after that (2019) the PF100T amp.

Having said that, I've been wrong on forecasting most things thus far, so I wont be betting a lot of money
