Willcox Bass Club (Lightwave)

Nice ‘snag’.

Thanks! I'm just glad I didn't end up with a $350 paperweight :). I tightened up all the pots, fixed the bright switch so it sits nice and tight (it was VERY loose), and cleaned up the fret board. Going to give the body a nice polish and patiently await my back panel from Willcox :)

Glad it was someone here that got it - I was a little too late to get it... but I do have a 5 string hybrid with midi kit.

I just noticed your avatar photo. Our paths crossed recently regarding the LTD AP-5. I picked one up and you mentioned you might be in the market for one soon. It was a couple months ago.

I can finally offically join the club

Hi all,

I do not own one, yet, but a fretless Saber has made my shortlist, and I’m doing some research. I figured Id go to the people who are committed to spending money on these instruments for some answers, if you don’t mind... If you do, I’ll just delete the post :)

Have you all had any problems with the electronics going out on you? Is there a contingency option built in in the event that happens? Also, from a tonal standpoint, do you find that you can cover a wide range of sonic needs, as a result of there not being pickups to ‘color’ the sound too much?

Thanks!

Hi I’ll answer honestly, but I have many basses and my 5 string Lightwave doesn’t get played a lot.

Have you all had any problems with the electronics going out on you?

I had a mono-bridge mal-function during a setup (low A string output). It appeared that the used model I’d purchased perhaps had some minor damage from a previous setup or string change.
I ended up speaking directly to Mr Wilcox as he answered the phone. He convinced me to “send it home”, which I did and was very pleased with the communication and service received.
I had the mono-bridge and battery replaced. Cost was reasonable. Work flawless.

Not that I’m aware of.

Also, from a tonal standpoint, do you find that you can cover a wide range of sonic needs, as a result of there not being pickups to ‘color’ the sound too much?

This is obviously subjective, but I used my Lightwave for more acoustic settings because it lacks mag pickup grind.
It’s tone, to me is very unique and requires completely different eq then any other bass I own to achieve ’my sound’.
Also, I’ve since decided I would prefer this pickup technology on a fretless bass and it would likely be a 4 string instead of 5.

Hope that helps :bassist:

Hi, I might have missed this discussion along the way - what are the recommended strings for this bass?
Appreciate if anyone could advice.

I have tried several different sets on my Lightwave basses. D'addario, SIT, LaBella, etc... I keep coming back to the ones that ship on the bass, or at at least the closest that I can get.
Dean Markley SR2000's. Not sure which gauge ships on the bass, but I like the 47-127 for my 5 string.

Here is another post I made quite a while back on this topic.

By the way, I just put a fresh set of Bronze Phosphor strings on my fretless and they are ridiculously cool. Some might not like the combination, but I do.

Hello everybody. Got my Lightsaber Saber 4-strg fretless yesterday (12-21-20). I'm not a pro; played the trombone when I was a kid and started teaching myself the bass a few years ago. That's how I relax at home.

Would like to join this group. :bassist:
