How about just Willcox Custom with the new V2 LightWave pickups and the Novax Fanned Fret System, built by our team in our California Custom shop? Hypothetically, of course :). Years ago this was a Technology Company selling basses. Now we're a full-fledged boutique bass builder, offering extremely high-quality instruments in their own right... that also happen to come equipped with the cutting edge evolution in pickups.



While there were a bunch of LightWave / Magnetic Field Pickup "Hybrids" floating around for a time, these are definitely a thing of the past. We have refined Optical Pickup technology (in combination with ICEtone) to the point where the addition of Magnetic Field pickups in the same instrument would only harm the output signal... the only thing traditional pickups would ADD would be EMI & other noise, infrasonic distortion, amplitude limitation, general mud, and 30% less harmonic content.

LightWave Optical Pickups perform the same function as traditional Magnetic Field Pickups, they simply do a much better job of it. In the past people have faulted basses equipped with LightWave systems Optical Pickups for reasons like; it only senses string vibration at a single point, unlike the majority of 2-pickup instruments or, "I can't cop a J-Bass / P-Bass tone with it". Quite right. A Willcox Bass is NOT a J-Bass or a P-Bass, it never will be, and that makes us very happy :) We're not for everybody, and we're not trying to be. We're trying to ADD something new and exciting... not copy or re-do. Our little club of Optical Pickup converts is all about Attraction rather than Promotion... Although many players find they can get all they'll ever need and more from a Willcox Bass, we're not trying to replace the "J" and "P" Basses. I love Jazz basses and still own 2. But this is something different and, for most purposes, better! The signal from our pickups is inherently noiseless... because there's no giant electromagnet right near the electronics!! Our pickups read 30% more harmonic content than even the best magnetic field pickups. It goes without saying they're more precise, coherent and "complete"... What's more.... magnetic pickups only measure string oscillation from side to side... LightWave Systems Optical Pickups measure string movement on two axes... side to side AND up and down....

Many players who are looking for that "neck pickup sound" or that "P-Bass tone" realize that these sounds have as much or more to do with where on the string you position your right hand and play over as they do the placement of the transducer itself... they just mistakenly attribute it to the pickup itself because they're resting their thumb over it.

Obviously much of this is subjective. Optical pickups are a wide departure from what most players are used to... and like I said we're not for everyone.. just the cool kids ;-). Hhahah seriously though..... the stuff we're working on right now is so exciting It's all I can do to not spill the beans on all of it but suffice to say... we're going to be rewarding our acolytes with some very special stuff very very soon. We are adding new dealers every day so check our website for more info, and watch for the big unveiling of our new website and lots of other cool announcements coming in August!!

In the meantime think of it this way, and Chris Willcox said it best: In terms of amplification, sound reproduction and recording, we’re living in the glory days. Yes, sure the fanned fret system on a custom shop bass would be of interest to me!

I few years ago (2? 3? I think it was after summer NAMM) I spoke to Chris via phone and asked about higher spec hybrids and he seemed interested. I gather from your words that focus has tightened internally and that may not be possible any longer. I def understand the scientifically backed position you allude to. I've just really enjoyed the tonal palled the hybrid affords. I like the woody mixed with (stingrayish) growl I can get. However, when I'm providing studio work, man the Lightwave system alone (on my non-hybrids) is just killer!

I did check my current inventory and I have 4 Hybrids (two 5's and two 4's [one tuned BEAD]), and two VL's (5 & 4).

Btw you speak of the Custom Shop. When will that actually be open?

With a nice set of tape wounds, it sings with a deep, woody voice. I'll take that over a P any day. Not that there is anything wrong with a P bass, but there are lots of basses that can cop a P sound.

We encourage people to experiment with different strings on these instruments. If you've always loved the feel of flatwounds but found them too dull, give them a try on a VL5. If you love that big piano tone, try Phosphor Bronze Strings.

Btw you speak of the Custom Shop. When will that actually be open?

Okay, so these pickups have gone through several iterations. Our most recent iteration is an entirely GraphTech unit in order to be as sonically "neutral" as possible. We've tried brass components, aluminum saddles etc, and graphtech works best for our goals. We use one hi-intensity infrared emitter, and two photodetector arrays wired in parallel, creating an interferometer. Superior to a simple photo-optical detector like you'd find in a High-End Compressor like the LA2A, this array reads the oscillation of the string on both the X and Y axis (both side to side and up & down... this is the 3D signal we refer to), but also reads any differentiation between the two signals post-detection, before recombination and output. This eliminates any of the lag and latentcy which, although musical and desirable in a classic compressor... is not in line with our goals. It all sounds more complicated than it really is, but magnetic field pickups were practically voodoo when they first showed up. A pickup is a transducer, it converts one form of energy into another. Optical pickups perform the same function as magnetic pickups... they just do it in a different (and we think, far more complete and effective) way. :)

I love technology.

Right now I have a set of DRs (I think Lo-Riders) on it and it growls. Not as acoustic sounding, but still not "magnetic". I'll be back to the LaBella tapes eventually though, I would LOVE to try them on a VL5.

How do I know which version of the pickups I have? Looks like all some type of plastic, graphtec I guess. Except for the adjusters and stuff. Are they all 3D? I only see one sensor.

My SL5 has Dean Markley SR2000's I liked the factory strings and have tried some others and keep coming back. I usually experiment with a few different strings until I find a set that I think makes that individual bass sound the best to my liking.

My VL5 fretless came used with a new set of LaBella deep talking Whites on it. I know they are expensive, so I wanted to like them. I never could get to where I liked them. I had some new D'Addario XLS laying around and they sound pretty good on there, but wil put SR2000's on it next.

I still have some barely used LaBellas.

If you see BRASS or ALUMINUM string saddles, you definitely have one of the older versions. If the saddle is Graphtech, I would need a picture or serial number to tell you for sure. Let's take this to PM and I can help you further!

We LOVE Labella. Just as everyone gets that look of shock, followed by cynical dismay when they find out that, yes there are actually only a very few factories in the world making new Vacuum Tubes... they get that same look when they find out how many different companies have their strings made by the same factory. Labella is truly an island unto themselves, and the whole team there is incredibly passionate about strings. It's an exciting place, and at least once a week someone comes running in from "the lab" out back and says something akin to.. "hey guys!! Lets try THIS!!" and and coolness always ensues.

We hope to be partnering with a string company in the near future to provide our players with Willcox String Sets engineered specifically for our instruments, with a range of offerings to suit different styles and goals.

I will get you s/n and photo by PM. For the benefit of the club, about what time frame would the different protypes be in use, and when was the switch-over to the new V2 with the all Graphtech?

For instance, brass prototype until 2003, then aluminum from 2003-2004, then xxx.... Etc...

Still don't understand how the 3D works and if it is only on the newer systems or all of them?

BTW, I have an extra set of Bronze Phosphor strings that I got for my Michael Kelly Dragonfly, but have been using tapes on that one.

Wonder what the Bronze Phosphor would sound like on my VL5 fretless? Would they be harder on the fretboard than the SS?

You're going to find these will impart a huge, round piano-like tone to your signal. And don't worry about abusing that Composite Fretboard... we build it tough!

I put Bronze Phosphor strings on two days ago. They are bright and full. I am not sure there is a tremendous difference between them and SS strings. I thought they might be obnoxious, but they aren't.

That's AWESOME!! Of course results vary depending on the rest of your signal chain, we've seen lots of different descriptors used for this solution.... but all of them good, especially with fretted rock tones!

Hi all, sorry it's been so long since I've popped on to TB, busy running around the world expanding our network of amazing Dealers and Retailers....

Anyway, just want to catch up on some of the recent questions on this thread!

These basses have always intrigued me. Do they make unlined fretless or is that a special order?

Nice looking bass, BTW.

We DO offer the unlined fretless standard at no charge, without having to go through the USA Custom shop... HOWEVER, we are currently backordered world-wide on these... partly due to a problem with our Graphite vendor, and partly due to the big Hanjin Shipping company bankruptcy, which currently has a couple of billion dollars worth of import goods tied up in it...

Ok, newbie question time.

Since it's an optical transducer, do you have to clean it at all to keep dust out?

I would imagine that at the most a blast of canned air would clean it out if necessary.

Not a newbie question at all, it's a totally new technology! Honestly, this hasnt been an issue. The IRDA's on these are fairly immune to static, and the transducer unit & wiring itself is pretty well sealed. Although we wouldn't recommend taking a bath with it, they're built to withstand load of dust, dirt, sweat etc. Now, if somehow you got a ton, and I mean like a TON of lint down inside the transducer housing that wouldn't be good, but we haven't ever gotten any reports of this kind of problem. However, as you stated, a shot of compressed air could never hurt!

Yeah, any idea on cost? I bet +$4000

Firm pricing on these by the end of October, and WAYYYY less than what you're thinking!
