Willcox Guitars Saber Bass with Optical Pickups System - review

I owned an original Saber Lightwave briefly about 15-20 years ago. I recall liking the feel and the tone, but it never felt that "useable" to me. I'm curious about the changes since then and whether I would appreciate it more now.

I wanted it specifically for an upright type of tone and it didn't work out for me. This thread motivated me to try it again and I still didn't like it so I sold it.
Thanks. That's exactly what I'm wondered, but I can't find one locally to try it with my set up and A/B it against my Spectorcore fretless...which *does* (after 2+ years of tweaking everything from pedalboard to my technique) gets a sound in *some* ways reminiscent of upright -- enough so at jazz gig people stop caring quickly that it's not a gen-u-wine db.
But I want a 5er, and the Spectorcore 5 is 35" scale; I want to stick with 34" scale. Wilcox 5s are 34" *and* chambered - seems perfect - so I was *really* curious. Guess I'll stick to my rule that unless I can try it and make sure it can achieve the sound I want, I'm not gonna drop dime.
