I had a scary, surreal experience last night, and I'm wondering if anybody else has had it, too...
I was messing around on my computer at home last night, fat, dumb, and happy, when:
- the game screen I was on disappeared;
- my desktop screen appeared for about 1/2 a second, then disappeared;
- a blue screen with a smiley face in a white box appeared; and
All by itself, Windows downloaded and installed Windows 10.
Didn't ask if I wanted it (and I don't, really -especially not at midnight); it just... did it. And I couldn't stop it. Turned the power off a couple times; didn't work. It just picked up right where it left off. It did ask me if I accepted it, or wanted to decline, on the "read the agreement" page, but - what happens if I decline? Am I left with a dead computer? I didn't know, and after what just happened, I was afraid to find out - particularly at 1 in the morning.
Anyway, this morning I found out that all kinds of things are missing, and need to be reloaded; and some of them are gone forever. And, it seems that Windows has (very quietly) admitted this was an "Oopsie", and promised it won't happen any more... doesn't do me much good, though...:banghead:

Windows10 ruined my laptop because nobody wrote new touchpad drivers. The redundant windows and "app" screens are infuriating, and, once installed, it wouldn't let me revert back.

I actually replaced it with a refurbished laptop with Windows7.

Is it any less of an abysmal pita than w8?

It's better than 8 but nowhere near as good as 7. It's really wonky. And it absolutely FORCES you to update all the time. I have it (10) on a work laptop and wish I had never done it. I also have a Sony Vaio with 7 on it. Thank goodness Sony hasn't gone out of its way to update the drivers for Windows 10. A Buenos window keeps pooping up trying to get me to "uograde" to 10. I guess Microsoft hasn't gotten the news yet that it's not a good idea on a Vaio yet.

If I keep reading stories like this one I will dump Microsoft for good and go all Apple and Linux.

Yeah, this happened to me today. Started my computer and came up to the Windows 10 screen. It had kept asking me to install (with the only options being "Install now" or "Later"), and I kept hitting "Later". And today it installed. I was....not happy. However, after you log in the first time, it asks you to accept the EULA. If you hit "Decline" it will ask you if you are sure, and if you say "Yes, I am sure I don't want this crap", it will reboot and attempt to recover the previous OS install (it also says it might take awhile). About 20 minutes later, I had my Windows 7 install back.

I then googled how to stop the Windows 10 update. So, hopefully I am all set................

I'm not saying this to be contradictory, but I have no problems with Windows 10 & installed it as soon as it was available.

Even my mother is using it w/o any troubles & she absolutely HATES change.

I'm using it at work. There are things I like about it, and things I don't. But I definitely don't like the fact that MS is basically trying to force it down everyone's throat. And there are reports that the updates will sometimes uninstall other 3rd party programs that aren't "compatible". Just not something I want to deal with on my home machine. But I have no problem with people who like it. To each there own. And I'm sure it will get better as time goes on, as MS fixes various issues. So I'll probably upgrade at some point, but I want it to be my decision, not the vendor.

Whoa! Now that's crossing every line there is. Luckily I mostly ditched windows about four months ago and am happy as a dog on a walk. I got a new Mac and I now dual boot my old windows machine with Linux mint which works great for when the time comes to say goodbye forever to windows. If you dig around you can find the exact updates which bug you about upgrading and remove them (for those who haven't been infested yet). I disabled updates on my win 7 machine years ago and only allowed security updates manually.

I'm not saying this to be contradictory, but I have no problems with Windows 10 & installed it as soon as it was available.

But were you forced to upgrade against your will? That's why people are becoming disgusted with Microsoft. Way too much control over your computer.
You won't want win10 after watching this video, you have literally no privacy, Microsoft can access every file on your computer. It's a massive data mining operation.

There's a revert back option, it gives you 30-days before it deletes your pre-win10 environment image.
Try Start>Settings>Update & Security>Recovery

I think this happens to people who inadvertently agreed to "reserve copy" at some point, which tells Microsoft "yes i want Win10 at some point" - they just took liberties with the "at some point" part. I have a really hard time believing this happens to people who have not opted in somewhere along the way.

I despise W10. I have read about the various updates that result in getting it and I refused all of them after I set updates to be manual thing. Unfortunately I have one machine that came with it.

The thing is W10 is free now but before long it won't be and they will be nickel and diming us to death. I won't get started on the rest of the nonsense with it.

What I absolutely hate about Windows 10 is the fact that they (at least that's what I read) bind your hardware to windows. That means you cannot simply swap your components. I'm sure that you can fix it somehow, but what the heck is Microsoft doing? pooping on their customers.

I have yet to find out how to permanently delete the automatic Windows 10 pre-load and the files. I never asked for a pre-load. I read that Microsoft implemented this B.S. with a Windows update. There's a way to delete the files and stop the auto-load (which will do it over and over again when you simply delete the folder), so if you plan on staying on Windows 7, have a look into that matter! :)

I generally get the bad versions (vista, 8). I upgraded to 10 and it is the only version of windows that crashes on me. YMMV.
c'mon man, don't you know? windows versions are like the opposite of star trek movies, only the odd-numbered ones are good (XP, 7).

OK, i actually had a work comp update itself from 7 to 8 (hated it) then 8.1 (pretty damn good). the 8.1 worked just like 7 but seemed a bit faster and more streamlined, all the tablet-friendly tile weirdness stayed out of the way.

my home win 7 machine has the free windows 10 upgrade icon lurking in the corner, but i'm holding off, since i'm rocking an old-school M-audio 24/96 soundcard that both supports the older pro tools m-powered and has an S/PDIF in which lets me run my old johnson J-station fully digital into the computer.

i have no idea if win 10 will support any of that.
