Windows 10 - Whether You want it or not...

As I see it the only reason that Linux isn't ready for prime time is software support, for me specifically games, it would be interesting to see what would happen if steam started working with WINE to get better support for Steam OS and Steam for Linux. I use Steam on my chromebook running ubuntu and use in-home-streaming to play games from my main computer running Windows 10


As for W10, I like it although I liked the home screen in Windows 8.1 better then the start menu in W10 since my main PC is connected to my TV.

I am not terribly fond of windows 8 but I have gotten used to it. I have downloaded a few free programs (such as a free DVD player) and suspect that anything that I didn't have to pay for, except for possibly Itunes will be declared VERBOTEN by M.S. if windows 10 were installed.

I'm working with it all the time - home and work - and I recommend it.

Yup, it has warts. It will occasionally drop an app during conversion, and you'll have to reinstall the app.
It loads lots of stuff that you might want to then shut off - some of the live tiles, maybe even Cortana depending on your machine.
But, it's good and stable, and it actually runs better on some machines than Windows 7. Key pieces were optimized, and some machines will actually see a performance boost after the upgrade.

I have loaded it on 4 machines now, and all the people using the machines like it very much. It's not weird looking like Windows 8. You'll feel at home very quickly.

It dropped everything back in exactly the same place. It really looks like just an update to the start menu. Even that isn't all that different, they just added cortana and a few more widgets on the right side of the bar. I did have to figure out how to update the drivers for the Mac function keys manually, but that took about 10 minutes.

Read my initial post again. My problems with it (aside from 10 installing itself without my asking or agreeing to it) are quite simple:
- It didn't "drop everything back in exactly the same place" on my computer. It did disable/uninstall some fairly important stuff (Kaspersky protection software, for instance); and as for most of the rest? God only knows where that went. Hopefully, it's in there somewhere...
- "looks like an update to the start menu". Not hardly. It looks like a computerized Dog's Breakfast on my computer; or, some overpaid software geek's wet dream...
- And, last but definitely not least, it rendered a lot of expensive hardware and software on my computer - useless.
But, I'm glad that YOU like it. AFAIC, Microsoft can stick Windows 10 up their collective ventral orifice - next to their right ear...:rolleyes:

Indeed, this is my only reason for not upgrading. Also, I've got a really slow Internet connection, and I don't want 4 computers in the house hogging all of the bandwidth with constant unnecessary network traffic. I've got Win10 on a tablet PC, and it's just fine. I don't even see any differences between the versions of Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, except that the settings dialogs have been somewhat rearranged.

My only reason for not switching to Linux is that I don't need to. Win 8.1 is fine, and I really don't see any practical differences between the different OS's relative to my use.

For those of you mentioning about how hard things are to find in Windows 10, have you tried tapping the Windows key on your keyboard, then starting to type what you are looking for? You don't have to wait for a search bar to open, just start typing. That starts pulling up all results associated with the text you are typing. For me, that is much faster than click on start, all programs, finding the folder I want, opening that folder, then clicking to launch the app/folder/etc I am looking for.
On items you need to use a lot, you can pin those to your task bar, to the start menu, as a tile, or the old fashioned way and drop it as a shortcut on your desktop.

Funny how Apple is praised for the single UI experience across all devices, then when Microsoft gets wise and decides to do it too, it's a bad move.

I updated from Win 8 to 10 because it was free.
I was very reluctant because I have been from Win 98, Vista, Win 7, win 8 in one year.
I had issues at first especially trying to get it to work with Google Chromecast, a HDMI stick.
Took many hours of reading. Currently working and 10 is working OK.

I think the next time I upgrade my PC, it will be a Mac. Heck, I might even go so far as to buy an iPhone to partner with it.
I put it off for years, because I was afraid of the availability of applications that I use.
Now that I no longer use Excel extensively, I guess it's time to move on.
I'm already using an open source spreadsheet program. It stinks compared to Excel, but I don't really need all the functionality any longer.
At one time I built an entire Management Information System based on Excel & Visual Basic.

I was quite impressed with the Power Macs even as far back as 1999.
My boss had a PowerBook & claimed he'd had it for 10 years. He still used it almost daily for his job.

Just to update this whole debacle:
Last week I hooked the computer in question back up, so a friend could help me fix the mess, and turned it on. Imagine my surprise when my normal desktop screen appeared - rather than the loony mess that came up before. So, yes, assuming that the initial screen was a fluke - Windows 10 does pretty much look like "normal".
And, yes, it turned out to be pretty easy to restore Windows 7. I did have to wade through a couple of questionnaires about "Why?" and "What don't you like...?", though. But, after telling them several times that yes, I'm sure I want Windows 7 back; I got it back. Along with all the software I lost. So, I'm a pretty happy camper. Naturally, the first thing I did after making sure everything was back to normal, was turn the Automatic Update feature OFF! So, I thought that was that... Wrong!
Windows now seems bent on - if not installing - at least downloading Windows 10 to your computer, whether you want it or not. They've tried 3 times in the last week to do it to me. Right in the middle of something, a white box pops up, with "Your Windows 10 download will commence in 59 min 57 sec"; and starts counting down. I've managed to forestall it so far, but only by totally disconnecting the computer from the Internet when I shut it off. And, if you look at your list of available updates? Notice that Windows 10 is there - and it's the only one with the "Install" box pre-checked - purely for your convenience, of course...:rollno:

My laptop asks me near daily to install it. Every time I have to change an operating system it takes me near as long to figure it out before I wear out the computer and have to learn the next one. Sheesh... Next thing you know they will want to replace my 8-track tape player.
