Winter 2017 Build Off - Speak of the Devil

Only issue so far:

I can't seem to bring the G string up to pitch without it breaking (OK, keep your minds out of the gutter :p) @michaelwayneharwood do you have any suggestions?

Quoting myself here as it's not exactly breaking - just the winding is getting pulled off. I seem to remember this happening with Michael's first install of these tuners. I don't remember the solution.

It appears to me that the set screw is not tightened enough to get the core gripped and it's unravelling. I would tighten it more if possible, or unwind the string and just tighten down the core. Did i send you dog point set screws or are they cup point or flat point?

They are the cup point set screws.

edit - No, flat point. Sheesh, my eyes are failing...

edit again, no, they are dog point. Now it's my mind that's going.

Since the bottom of the channel is rounded I found smaller strings to need the set screw to be tightened a bit more than the others. It's a balance between just right and too tight, but you can crank up the pressure some without fear. I take it for granted, but have done enough instruments with the tuners that it is second nature to me now. I have strung up plain steel guitar strings without issue as well.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow - I tend to get impatient when I'm tired. The D and A strings are also slipping. At this point, I don't want to strip the threads by tightening too much. I'll start fresh tomorrow. Thanks for the quick response, by the way :)

I was afraid of that as well initially, but have found they can tighten up nicely without fear. Worst case scenario I will fine tune a set and send you replacements.

@michaelwayneharwood, have you considered drilling the hole for the set screws deeper to give you an irregular surface when clamping the screws.
I did, and that would be an improvement for a second manufacturing run if it ever happens. As it is now I have a ton of tuners and don't see myself running out anytime soon.

*edit* Unless I decide to take a stab at picking up where this thread left off and see if it can be done... ;)

Another thing you could try: Cut a teeny rectangle of copper shielding tape and wrap a little collar around the end of the string, like two wraps. The setscrew will then smash the copper down into the gaps between the windings, adding to the surface area and increasing the grip. Soft copper sleeves are used when crimping fittings onto wire rope, for that reason.

Also, before you cut off the end of the string, bend a sharp 90 degree hook, facing up, right after where the setscrew would be with the tuner head fully extended. Then cut the string off, leaving a small hook, just low enough that it will fit in through the hole and hook behind the setscrew.

@michaelwayneharwood as a future design change, you might consider adding a drilled hole in the top surface, just behind the setscrew, leaning back at maybe 45 degrees. The idea is that, with the setscrew loosened, you would feed the end of the string in through the end hole and out the angled hole on the top. Then you could pull on the extended end to get it taught, while tightening the setscrew. And, tightening the setscrew would force a small kink into the string, which would add to the grip. After tightening, you clip the string off.
