Thanks, the fretless was fun, it really got me hooked on piezos and I need to do more with them. Especially now that I've got a cheap DIY preamp/buffer figured out that I really like, which sounds good even with the cheapo $1 piezos off eBay. I can build my own (wood) bridge, slap on a piezo, slap on one of these preamps, and have half the "hardware" on an instrument all sorted for maybe $10 in total.

Right on. The strap ties it all together. Or not, depending on how skilled one is in pairing a strap with an instrument. It's a subtle skill, as subjective as objective. I'm working on becoming a master strapolier myself...

I agree on the subjective vs objective part. I'd be willing to bet that some people would "disagree" with some of my strap choices, but to me, these are the ones that just clicked. It's a gut response reaction more than anything.

Yeah, I've owned a single strap since about 1989. It's black and plain and that's all there is to it. I think it actually came with the first bass I ever bought. I keep thinking "I should get a nice strap" and then I go "Well, I already own this one...."

Still have my first strap, leather from '82, it's currently residing on my acoustic bass.
I do believe the strap is an integral part of the the whole bass. The wrong strap would be like a tort pickguard on an Alembic

I still own the first strap I ever had too, although I don't know where it is and don't use it any more - I think it's in a box somewhere in the basement. It's a 90's Fender strap with the word "Fender" repeatedly embroidered in giant white letters on a black background every few inches. It's super tacky. I bought it for my first ever electric guitar, which was a low end solid body Washburn I bought purely because I was excited to actually see a left handed guitar for sale after months of looking.

I sold the guitar a long time ago but kept the strap. I bought that strap for that guitar because I thought it would be ironic to have a recognizable name brand strap on a second-rate guitar. I got my first bass shortly after that, which I still have and you can see in the background of some of my photos - it's an Ibanez ATK350. Considering it is arguably a knockoff of a Music Man bass, teenager me thought it would be cool to continue the ironic trend, so I put an Ernie Ball strap on it (which you can also see in some of the photos!)

So I guess I've had interest in "matching" straps since early on, but my tastes have definitely matured a bit since those early days.
