The 0.084" inch rule was made at my request a few years pack. There was a rule or proposed rule that would not accommodate commercially available Bass VI string sets.

I have no objection to inclusion of other commercially available string sets intended for instruments with "bass" in the name or some other reasonable wording.

You're in Australia, correct?
Not sure what the vehicle culture is like over there, but there's a whole brand loyalty/tribal war culture over here.
Especially with the pickup truck crowd.
(Mostly the internet. People are more civil in person, because, well,....getting punched in the face, hurts).

There was for a long time with the Ford / Holden (GM) but I never really got into it. I drive the Falcons for the reasons I described. Now that neither brand manufactures here anymore it's only old farts that maintain the rivalry. Most people will buy what they like in their chosen range with Mazdas and Toyotas being market leaders.
My first cars were Mazdas usually with heavily worked 13B turbos that saw off just about everything. Mid 80s I did 11.39 @ 138 in my rotary in the same trim I drove it to work. Countaches were low 14s at the time. I was a big fan of Colin Chapman and kept weight low and power high.

I'd never heard of Kalium. They sell singles! I could use a few Bass VI high E strings. Thanks for the info.

I don't see how that has any effect on keeping or changing any rule about string gauge, though.

Maybe pitch is a better stipulation than string size? Lowest frequency in the bass range is 250 hz, closest note to that is B3 (the B on top of the bass clef, below middle C) at 246.94 hz. So if you use that measure an instrument must be able to play at least a B3 to produce bass. (Which means guitars are in :smug:)

Meh...:meh:. rules suck.

I have a "guitar" to build during the WBO time frame.
I get that it's not a bass. Even if it's a 27" baritone with...what... .072" low string? Ballsy... yet not "bass"
I don't expect to enter it in the "build off"... for that reason.

But then... I wonder why.
I consider this place to be a wonderful Guild of stringed instrument builders.
yes... it is bass dominant. But exclusive?

... at least I would hope... it would simply be embraced... as another stringed instrument build by a guild member. Because this is where I hang out.

"Traditional" guitar vs bass (solid or semi).. ...construction processes don't differ all that much.

I would even say.... an EUB is more "different"... than either one! Yet there have been wonderful EUBs along side "traditional" basses in these contests.

So... yeah... that's my opinion.

I started a thread for my little 4 string guitar side project and no one seemed upset.
Even Bruce checked it out and posted, which I was excited about.
Although, the minute I said it wasn't going to be a bass, before I even finished the sentence, I literally felt him leave the thread and he hasn't been back.
It hurt a little, but, at least it wasn't deleted, or moved to TDPRI.
So, I have that to cling to.

At first I was thinking, yeah, this is TB, it should be all about bass.

But then I thought, hmmm... would I be happy or sad if some builders didn't participate because they wanted to build a piccolo bass.

I decided I would be sad to miss out on a great piccolo bass build because of some rule, even if it made sense at some point to some people. Put me in the "remove the string gauge requirement" camp.

See, @Rôckhewer is thinking like where I went. The main point here IMHO is building as opposed to building basses. There have been plenty of threads where someone has built a guitar without "consequences" from the community, so I wondered why a guitar build might be any different. The last negative comment about a guitar build was literally years ago that I recall :)

Please keep the thoughts coming!

I'm sure I have some type of bipolar or multiple personality thing going on (whatever, that's everyone else's problem, not mine) so I simultaneously feel like we should adhere to some definitive guidelines,....and like it should be a free for all.
Should these be inside thoughts?
I guess I'd be happy either way.
But I draw the line at pan flutes.

Well, I'm new to this side of the fence, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think, as this is TB, if you mainly build basses and have an interesting guitar (or other) build, why not? I'm sure that at least the newbs like me will learn something from it. I have no interest in (say) mandolin, but if one of the experienced builders here made a build thread, I'd read it.

Edit: thoughts above were generalities. If it's a fun contest, then there needs to be rules, but a piccolo bass, or a Bass VI type or even a tapping instrument that has it's fundamentals in the bass range should all be fine.
