Winter Build Off 2022 - Get Ready

just keep in mind the total lack of jeopardy and you will be fine!
This will be my first scratch build and my first build-off. So, I'm no authority. But I would say stop there and you should be good.
Wait for the the official thread tomorrow, then start a build thread with your wood pics and link your thread in the official build-off thread.
At least I think that's how it works.
@Beej will be around at some point to clear it up.
The way it generally works is that Beej (in this case) will start a new thread which will have the catch-phrase for the build-off. Create your build thread and post a picture of your wood-pile with the catch-phrase on a piece of paper in shot. You can then post a link to your build thread in the build-off thread. Beej will post more definitive info tomorrow.

Glad to enter you in the "yes" column of my entrants spreadsheet. 
Tomorrow at 1600h PST (UTC -8) I'll post up a thread called "Winter Build Off 2022 - ThreadTitleToBeDetermined". The rules and crap will be posted and this discussion will hopefully mostly move over there going forward.
Entrants will each create a build thread with the title "Winter Build Off 2022 - YourThreadTitleHere" and in it they will put:
1. a link back to the main thread for cross-linking purposes.
2. a planned specs list of their build
3. declaration of what category they are entering.
4. a description of how the build fits the theme. (This one is purely for my own entertainment and I hope to read some wonderfully flowery BS

5. a "wood pile" pic. This is usually a pile of dimensioned or raw lumber, but depending on one's build category, it could be a pile of parts and pieces. The catch is: each entrant will have to put a specific phrase somewhere in the pic. That phrase will be announced in tomorrow's Build Off announcement thread. This way, no one can cheat. Well, except me.

Stepping back a few to filing aluminum:
Chalk helps, a file card (brush with short steel bristles) helps, and if you really want to go for the hard to find, there are special files for working with softer metals, but you have to find a well stocked source to ever see one that isn't meant for filing steel. And then you have to keep it locked up so somebody (including that guy in the mirror) doesn't borrow it to have a go at hardened steel with it.
"Curved tooth" is the classic form, but I'm seeing some straight tooth ones as well on the interwebs. They clog somewhat less.
Depending what you are trying to achieve, "linishing" which as best I can decode is a fancy word for "belt-sanding on metal" is another approach, but you're probably going to want a dedicated belt-sanduh (or the old 1x42 belt grinduh) for that one.

Still cleaning out the barn. I might actually have a clear surface to work on by tomorrow.
I have a nice half-round file at work that's made just for soft metals. I even put a big red tag on it saying aluminum or brass only. We have several files for steel. Someone always uses the aluminum one for steel....
