Winter Build Off 2022 - Get Ready

I'm on the Continent so I'm ahead even of you 5tring. But I'm afraid we'll have to wait until sixteen hundred pacific on Tuesday. :)

At which time I should be asleep.

Well, the build off rules don't require you to be asleep….. :roflmao::cool:

I love 360 brass for nuts. It cuts like butter - easy as bone. Doesn't load up files like sticky aluminum.

I snagged some brass bar stock in 1/8" and 3/16" thickness to try brass nuts from scratch.
And aluminum TOTALLY clogs up a file. I've used it in the past, works okay, but is very cloggy.
The WBO bass won't have much hardware. The tuners and saddles will be black and the string anchors will be aluminum. I figured I'd try to match them with an alum nut. I got 6061 on Bruce's recommendation, as it's a little harder and less gummy than the stuff from box stores. He uses that stuff like hot sauce. If I have a hard time making it work, I have the brass. But I really want an alum nut on this one. It's a whole purse match the shoes thing.

Many moons ago when I used to do a real job in a real workshop we used some chalk-like substance (might even have been chalk) to pre-load the grooves in our files before working on aluminium. It wasn't perfect but definitely helped with the clogging.

most of the clog could be removed from the files with a wire brush, and we had something like a dental pick for getting the bad bits out.

in summary, use brass

Today is a good day for shop cleanup, tool organization, template and jig making, material and supply inventories and last minute total changes in the work plan. :)
I told my boss I had to stay home to take care of all of that. Even though he seemed mad, he was in full support and gave me the rest of the year off to work on the build. Sounds like I can have all of next year also, because he said dont bother coming back in after News Year.

I wonder why he took my employee ID before I left....
