Winter Build Off 2022 - The PeavEsh StinGer

Anyone else in the winter build off still staring at a pile of wood?

I made a to-do list, which includes running new 220V service out to the garage for the old stove so I can get my wood down to the proper humidity level. Sitting it on top of the heating ductwork in the basement is only getting it so far. Any extra points for having to run 220?

- I have my paint (gasp!) picked out
- I ordered stock for the string tree since I didn't have any (more on that later)

Slow and inconsistent... that's the key....

Some progress has been made! 240V install is complete

The old oven has had the new cord connected and tested. A more accurate temperature monitor has been installed (yes, metric system! ) It holds 150°F fairly well, but I'll be drying at a slightly lower temp.

On to the neck!
The 2mm plastic factory side dots were, well, boring. I had this 2mm Luminlay material in my parts bin for awhile, might as well use it. Drilling out the factory pieces on a janky jig. Something happened when I drilled the 12th fret markers, one of them is a little off. Oops.

I used epoxy to set them, sanded smooth and topped with cyanoacrylate. Sanded smooth again, they will get more of a final sand after I dress the fret ends.

TLC for the neck
This was a leftover from the Peavey warehouse that I bought as NOS on Reverb. I knew it wouldnt be showroom ready out of the box, but I didn't expect the mess. (The seller did disclose the condition, so no hard feelings there and I would buy from her again in a second)

The frets had thick adhesive residue and epoxy from the carbon fiber casting process. The frets were (honestly) pretty bad which is probably why it wasnt used for production. It was probably someone's first one and didnt do that great of a job. They seem to be leveled, they just weren't seated as well as they could have been...

I'm planning on refretting it at some point, so I wont worry about that too much now. I usually dress the fret ends really well, but a few passes with Micromesh and it's pretty good.

What a difference! What a nice piece of Pau Ferro, it's a lot darker than usual. This makes me wonder if it was an early production one-off of Indian Rosewood. Anyone want to chime in on that?
