Exactly the same in terms of process! The only difference is in the colors. The lavaburst used Transtint "Red Mahogany" and "Amber" whereas the new jazz body uses Transtint "Perfect Red" and a 50/50 mix of "Perfect Red" and "Lemon Yellow." And both basses utilize "Dark Mission Brown" as the contrasting sandback color.

I wanna make sure I understand - the first coat(s) of stain are the brown, and then that's partially sanded off before applying the burst colors. Do I have that right?

Exactly. I will use either black or very dark brown, and apply one or two heavy coats. Let it dry about a half hour or so.

Here's how dark it looks:

Then sand back with 400 grit, to get something like this:

Then use some mineral spirits to clean out any residual dust, and apply your color combo:

Which should give you something like this:

Then apply your clear coats, buff it out, and put the thing together:

Are you flattening between coats?

Usually in between every two coats, I'll do a light scuff sand (wetsanding with spirits) using 600. Any drips or runs might need 400.
