First and foremost, this is going to be experimental!
For the last couple of years my wife has been encouraging me to branch out a bit and explore some of the, shall we say, "non-standard" building practices. Around the same time, I've started having some lower back issues related to injuries from the past that are deciding to make themselves known. All my current basses are heavy. Real heavy. And, since I have a background in boat work, I am going to attempt to kill multiple birds with a single stone… or bass. I will be attempting to build a foam core, carbon fiber bass (bolt on, CF neck with a Richlite fretboard), single, passive P pickup (self wound), and with my own through-body bridge design. I am planning on some internal reinforcements at key points… thus the spruce in the title. If it works, great! If not, I reserve the right to completely switch directions and build a boat, and airplane, or a unicycle!
Enough talk; here's some pictures (there's not going to be much to see for a while, I'm afraid).
Gloves… lot's of gloves!
I've got a significant pile-o-supplies inbound in the next coupe of days… Had to spend that Christmas windfall strategically!
Moving on, some of you probably caught the bridge prototype I posted in the "What's on your Workbench" thread a couple days ago… and if not, you didn't miss much! Yesterday, I knocked out a drill guide that the individual pieces drop into.
I addd some knockout holes so that the little buggers could be removed…
And made a knockout tool.
The rest of the evening was dedicated to cutting parts and drilling masters
