Jon Clegg: I keep thinking more and more about making a bridge like this. I havent much metalworking experience so I have dumb basic questions:

Where does one get pieces of brass (or other metal) like that? I was planning to use chrome-ish hardware so brass might throw off the aesthetic balance.

How did you attach the bar to the plate?

I think I got the overall body design down. I redrew the pickguard and finalized the control layout. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the pickguard shape a way I like it near the upper horn waistline. Everything else looks kosher to me.

Oh and found the headstock I'm trying to do, albeit a guitar. I like the tuning machines pointed down

I bought the brass stock off of ebay, either from makermaterialsupply or zoro. The main plate is 1/8" thick and the bar is 1/4 x 3/8". As for the color, you could either DIY nickel plate the brass or use aluminum.

I connected the bar to the plate by drilling and tapping the bar for #8 x 3/8" stainless steel machine screws, though #6 screws would actually be a better fit.

There's another thread here Who can make me a non standard bridge plate? about making a custom bridge where Bruce Johnson has some recommendations on materials.

They will be mated with a backbone made from a black walnut cutoff from a lap steel project earlier this year. In the aformentioned cigar box, I found my last Danelectro sized lipstick pickup, so of course it's gonna be used since I have never seen one used in a bass (except for the old Danelectro bass's). Now for the automotive angle, I don't have the tools or skills to do a sweet 60 caddy grill or 57 chevy fin design but I do have a 1960 (Year of my birth) Texas license plate that's in good enough shape to use as a pick guard. At least after I clear coat it to protect me from tetanus from the err ummm patina.... LOL!!!!! That license plate will also allow me to add a little metallic resonation to the mix.

Well this is my idea so far..... An automotive themed, short scale, cigar box, resonator, semi hollow, junkyard, steel guitar, bass that wont win anything but a few laughs. But then again I won't spend a dime on it since I'll be using nothing but pull off or NOS parts found in my garage & hobby luthier shop. Considering her automotive lineage…. She will be dubbed the rat rod bass.

OK OK I will buy some strings.

So..... Is there gonna be a prize for the least spent on a project? LOL!!!

Thanks! It's really coming together nicely to my eyes. I have a feeling that some of the lines I'm nitpicking over are going to be fine regardless of what I do.

Nice, it's such a gorgeous headstock! Much better looking with the tuners that way instead of the banjo ones.

I am working on collecting prizes again this year. My focus will be with wood. I will be looking for pieces of wood to provide as prizes. I've already picked up one prize from Gilmer. I'll be reaching out to my other wood sources to see if they are willing to contribute to the prize vault. I know a couple of them will say yes. I have had a couple people indicate they would contribute to the prize vault as well. If any body could help me out with contributions to the prize vault, or suggest wood sources, please PM me. (I do have a request in at the Local Home depot to see if they could contribute a gift card)

As stoked as I am to start... the Chief Financial Officer gave me permission to blow up the garage... figuratively... and make room to do the build. I convinced her another workbench was absolutely necessary. All I had to say was “It won’t be on the coffee table” and she was in. I’ll post my pile of parts but it’ll be a slow start. But I’ll start AND finish!! Provided I work more time than the hours than I spend reading all your threads!!!!!!!!
