It would be cool to approach it the same way you'd chop, channel, or section a car. Turn a blocky clunky design into a sleek cruiser.

The original is like 21" wide by 24" long - when I thought of doing it as a mashup, I watched a now defunct youtube video of the owner doing a rundown of the instrument and he laid tape measures along it to show dimensions.

If I built it, I wanted it playable, so I took a copy of the best straight on shot I could find, lined it up perfectly, split it in half, took the half, mirrored it and put them together to get a perfectly lined up design. Then I changed the ratio and stretched it so that it would fit on a 14x22" blank, and printed it off.

Then I traced it for the full scale drawing, and when I did so, I altered the angles of where the upper and lower horns meet the body to better clear the fretboard with 5 strings. I drew it up at 34" scale, and in my drawing you can see where the 12th fret lies - not quite enough to ergonomically play nicely (the headstock will be too far off to the left when playing). My design is shooting for around 8lbs with chambering - with my original plan calling for maple core and poplar top/back. Were I to do it right now, I'd probably use a cherry core with walnut top and back.

I'd probably downsize the body, go with a 32" scale, modify the horns a bit to improve access and maybe go with a modified scroll headstock. And make it METAL!

I see this as being the only drawback of this theme.
The shape of Mothman is not really inline with anything ergonomic.

If we were to go down this path, I suspect the builders would need to have some liberties

Yeah, I was also thinking of how I could graft the thematic elements onto something like a Dano Longhorn to make something more playable.

Well look what I found in my drawings pile... Rescaled and stretched to fit on a 14x22" blank...I didn't get as far as a headstock. This was one of my mashup ideas tossed aside...

The whole "problem" with the MoMan design...is the width and bulky...ness.
That..... could be 3d carved & contoured down to look fairly bitchin'.

I'm totally down for this idea, but I don't think it would work very well because it requires a totally different skill set compared to most of what we do here.

Once you start getting into really off the wall stuff it means we end up with a bass that is interesting but probably doesn't get much use or could be sold. I'd prefer to end up with something I'd potentially use - but I have plenty of "lookers" now, what's one more as long as the one off isn't expensive, I guess.

That's so true for me as well...I love the off the wall wackery, but it is typically just a conversation piece at that point, even if it is a good player. It's the main reason I parked my "mothchild" design in the mashup build off...

Another example is my old steampunk guitar. Everyone who sees it loves it and raves about it, but no one will take it to play live, despite +++ offers to lend it out. At this point, it's got great pickups, great tone and plays really nicely...but hangs on the wall... I guess that's actually just fine when I think about it, but there's something to be said for making something that gets played and not just admired.

Looking over this list I like 4, 5, and 18
