Wireless system - low strings question

I am talking about systems many times the price and quality of the Line6 stuff: even top of the line professional Shure systems for example - stuff that costs thousands per unit.

Like he says ^^^^^

The best systems sound the best, but wired still sounds just a little better.

I would bet any amount of money you're willing to lose that you wouldn't be able to reliably tell the difference in a double blind test - both of you are hearing with your eyes...

Well, you are entitled to your opinion, but only about our hearing abilities..

I can assure you that Paulears is not hearing with his eyes when he tells you, quite correctly, that this is a measurable documented scientific reality, not just an opinion about how it sounds to us.

Line 6 is good - BUT - a cable still sounds better. That applies to every radio mic system at any price. There is conversion from the original, and then re-conversion at the other end. It doesn't matter if the system is all analogue or analogue and digital - the signal path from guitar to amplifier is so much cleaners without the wireless element. With the best electronics the sound is nearly the same as with a cable - but there is a measurable difference. That all said, many people cannot hear it. Doesn't mean it's not there though!

Measurable in what way??? - and what exactly are the "measured differences"??? Even the best cables money buy will still incur some signal loss, and add some capacitance - even if it is a tiny amount...

Yeah, I see him posting that, but would like to see something documented to back it up - I will still extend the same bet to him as well... Frankly, there are ALOT of BSers on the 'net - and I have a difficult time believing something from a random stranger that contradicts my direct experience...

Frankly, you've moved to dancing around the edge of insulting us for (apparently) knowing more about this than you. I don't know where Paulears knowledge comes from, but I actually teach college level audio courses.

Frankly, I don't think your opinion is very open to being changed, and, as long as you hear no difference, then there IS not difference for you, and that's fine.

Fine - dazzle me with the "measured differences", then - if you can...

I'm still waiting for some "measurable documented scientific reality" to be displayed - after all, it seems to me that anyone who "teaches college level audio courses" should know that the burden of proof lies with those making the claim.

In a live sound situation (which is, after all, the forum this question was asked), I really doubt wireless vs. wired is going to make a hair of difference to the crowd. Your wireless system would have to be amazingly awful, and even cheap systems these days aren't that awful. You might as well decry mp3's for being a heinous representation of recorded music while you're about it; the masses don't care about the loss of quality there, either, and that's a MUCH bigger impact on audio quality than modern wireless systems are...

Additionally, the OP was asking about wireless systems. This pretty much by definition means they aren't interested in wired, so coming in trying to claim that wired is the only way to go really isn't helping address the OP's question. There are plenty of good wireless options that handle a 5-banger with no perceptible degradation in sound quality (at least for live sound). And as mentioned, the Line 6 Relay series is probably some of the better bang for buck in this arena.

Exactly - I've been a working musician for over 30 years, and have been using an XDR-95 for going on 6 years... I actually have used it's DI to record with, and it recorded extremely well... I've got pretty good ears, too - and have done ALOT of wireless vs cable comparisons... This also isn't the first time I've been thru the wired vs wireless discussion here, so I don't have alot of patience for BS... Even if there were "measureable differences", you can bet that they have ZERO impact on a live performance - which is the ONLY reason to use wireless... Furthermore, I have yet to see any of these self proclaimed "experts" provide any meaningful data to back their claims of wired superiority...

As I mentioned, ALL cables incur some degree of signal loss, and added capacitance - they're not exactly a vaccuum, either...

+1

...and even though I currently use wire, what I like about wireless is, ya never have to worry about people (including me) tripping over the wire or things getting tangled. With the Line 6 Relay wireless systems, the quality of sound is a total non-issue. So, for me, the question is, do I hassle having to change batteries and enjoy the "no-trip" wireless system, or do I stick with wire and never worry about batteries. It's a personal preference thing at that point (IMO). I say pick whichever system you like, and play some music!

EDIT: of course, one added benefit of wireless is, it allows the bassist to crowd surf during those hot bass solos!

In my last band, I shared the stage with 2 guitarists, a singer, and a drummer - the reality is, if it weren't for wireless, our stage movements would've been severly limited... Also, being able to check out the FOH sound for myself has proven invaluable... I started using Li-Ion rechargeables a couple of years ago, so batteries haven't been an issue since then..

Lastly, it IS really nice not getting tripped up by cables...

+1 to everything you just said, George. And good point about Lithium Ion batts.

I am using wire as of the past ten years or so. Before then, I had one of those X2 2-space rackmount wireless units. It was great not having a physical connection. I can't recall whether Li-Ion batts were readily available back then as they are now. Side note: I put Li-Ion batts in all of my smoke detectors in my home, and instead of having to replace batts every six months, I now have to do it once every ten years! Nice!!

i so wish the relay 50 pack used 9V so i could put my Invalid Link Removed in it!

i use 'em for my in-ears, and they're actually stronger than alkaline, plus they fully recharge in like 20 minutes.

anyway yeah, if you're worried about that last bit of bottom end then digital wireless is the ticket, there's no companding and you get full CD-quality bandwidth.

(of course your amp and the PA probably aren't doing much of anything below 40Hz, and even that "30Hz" open low B string is really mostly just pumping out the 60Hz first octave.;))

Lots of opinions here, thnx!
I went with the Line6 G30, Fulltone patchcables and a sock over the transmitter (to keep it from falling of the strap, that is)

Besides, It IS live situations we're talking about and with the bass going through the PA, the only one noticing any difference between cable and Wireless would be us on stage... and while having the cabs port system in the rear, the placement on stage will make a bigger audiable difference than that of the cable vs wireless :-)

Thnx a heap and wrok on!
