Agreed.

You can knock more of the buzz out of the picture by running a ground wire to the strings from the jack, but the selects wish uses are inherently pretty noisy.

also, I just pulled the trigger on the bubinga fantasy! Fought it for a few days, but better judgment lost out in the end. One of the reasons was that it already had the KA humbucker installed. Fingers crossed that that will alleviate some of the poor s/n ratio of having a single coil pickup very close to the bridge.

Congrats on the fantasy, I've liked both of his recent bubinga offerings.

I did find on one bass that the amount of hum decreased after I raised the Select pickup and got a hotter signal. I've been also thinking about a pedal of some sort to raise the gain before the amp too.

raising the PU definitely helps, it's really all about increasing signal to the noise of the RF interference. The pedal won't help though as the RF's already gotten into the PU at this point...the varitone that Thunderritter's talking about really does help; I've got one in pete's old 3-string lobe-esque bass, and it all but eliminates the nosie. Much of the high end definition too, but that's sort of the point of the device :) Pretty much other than that, it's really about swapping out for a hum cancelling unit.

See if I can beat everyone:

The KA is a humbucker -- so named because it has two coils wired reverse polarity from each other so that the noise each one picks up is cancelled out by the other.

The EMG Select is a single coil, so whatever interference it picks up winds up going to the amplifier where it comes out as hum.

Thanks, I value your experience. And speaking of that... Do you happen to own one of the Hercules hangs-by-the-neck stands with auto neck clamp and if so, did it interfere with the FretFX wire you had threaded through the "throat" of the headstock to the LED strip? I like those stands but am interested in the FretFX too.

newfuture: Congrats on the Fantasy! I will be very interested in getting a report from you once you get it. That one looks set up very much like a JB; which we all know what that means. It will be good to hear what the KA has to offer. On my JB, it is a done deal that this bass is going to have a very treble affect to it. I run it thru my Wishbox which helps, but it is just a completely different voice than any of my other Wishbass. Which isn't a bad thing, just different.

The Conq didn't rise to reserve - wonder what Wish is going to do. I have grown fond of that one for some reason. Oh well ...

WR: About your question about me developing my own line of basses. That seems like a pretty crazily ambitious concept in light of how much i don't know about all of this stuff. The more I hang out in the Luthier's Corner the more I realize what a silly noob I am to all of this! Still, my mind does wander a bit down the "build your own bass, boy" path more and more frequently these days. Who knows, by the time I get all of my Wishbasses refined - hmmmmm ....

I think the Krappy bass guy started w/o too much knowledge and seems to have fun, so I think it is doable. It sure would be fun to try some interesting prototypes, I've been having some ideas for an acoustic model that has decent acoustic volume.

I use conventional stands, so no problems there, although most of the time I hang my Wishbasses from bicycle hooks - that's one great use of the open headstock design!

The standard KA Wish fits is a soapbar design, which as far as I know are not humbuckers.

Unless he has them custom wound (:D) he fits the Kent Armstrong classic soapbar design. If it's a 'classic soapbar' then it's should not be a humbucker. I'm happy to be wrong, however!

I've got one in my Fantasy and it hums, albeit not as much as the EMG Select. Still as a p-up its much hotter than the EMG.
