Bass sure got a lot of looks, not sure if they were positive or negative, more like "what the ..... is that?". I love playing the bass at home, sounds cool, probably great to record with, but live, I could barely hear the thing. I had to turn my amp up probably double the amount of with my other basses, even the passive ones. Then I remembered why I hadn't brought one to a gig in a while. I had the same problem with a couple other Wishes I had brought a year or two ago. Just can't hear the dang things. Low output, sounds great, just really low output. Have you guys had this problem? I am starting to think that at least for mine, they will remain as art, not a bass for any kind of practical use. A little disappointed. I'm sure they can be modified to have more output but I am really not into modding. I'd probably have to though if I really wanted to use one of these live.

well probably not. But I'd love to know what it's going to be. Wish should advertise about, especially, if it's really going to be the last Wishbass (I doubt).
I have six basses right now, which is four more than I really need (I'm not even in a band!).

I remembered reading this thread on fingerboard wear a couple of days ago; the CA technique might work to fill in the large grain of the wenge board.

You can always use flat wounds or half-wounds (if you must use rounds, try using nickel, as it is softer), or you can treat your board with epoxy or CA glue (I prefer CA, myself). What I did on one of my ebony boards was impregnate the grain with CA, then sanded it back down to where I could feel the wood again. Essentially this filled in the grain of the ebony, and strengthened the board while still maintaining the feel of wood.

Wave Rider: More my concern is the tone deadening properties of wenge, I hadn't really considered the open grain issue - which might explain how it could effect tonality. Geez, now I have 2 issues to worry about. Oh well, we'll see what gives once the bass arrives in my hot little hands! Thanks for the imput though ....

Tom Clement has successfully used CA to harden fretless fingerboards. You can probably contact him through his website to get advice. www.clementbass.com

I thought wenge was a pretty hard wood and the tone deadening properties were due to its coarse grain. I could easily be wrong. However...

Start worrying only after you know there is a problem. All this talk may be purely academic and the bass will sound stellar!

The Janka Hardness Scale is the industry standard for gauging the ability of various wood species to tolerate denting and normal wear. It is a measurement of the force necessary to embed a 0.444-inch steel ball to half its diameter in wood.

Here is a comparison of the fretless fretboard woods Wishnevsky will use (from hard to soft)

Ipe 3,684 (The hardest wood)
Ebony 3,540
Jatoba 2,350
Greenheart 2,350 (Wish will call this "Ipe" but it's not)
Persimmon 2,300 (aka, American ebony)
Bubinga 1,980
Purpleheart 1,860
Rosewood 1,780
Locust 1,700
Wenge 1,630
Hard Maple 1,450

I mentioned to Wish a couple of years ago I wanted # 1000 and he called a couple of months back to let me know someone else wanted the number if I didn't and he needed to get started on it pretty soon. I really regret letting the other guy have it, I would have liked to end my wishbass collection with that number, but anything he could possibly build me after #701 would have to be a letdown. I love that bass so much, I recently bought a Dingwall to go with it.

BTW, DR black beauties installed, look great with the black hardware dont' they?

Yep, I think they call it whalepool blue on a flame maple top. It has a MONSTER tone for passive electronics. It's given me inspiration to mod #701 with actives so I don't have to do so much tinkering with my amp when I switch between them.

Let me know how you like the varitone. I'm thinking about a wishbox to share between the five I own.

Gentlemen: By Friday of this week, I will be the proud, but confused owner of 2 short scale (30") bass guitars (Banana & Fantasy) made by Wish. The fingerboards and necks are completely unmarked and I have no clue as to how to set up the 'fret' positions and such. Is this something I can do myself or do I really have to take them to a luthier and 'admit defeat' in this way? I am sure this has been discussed in this forum before (somewhere), but if it is something I could tackle at home, it will need to be explained in very simple "gee, you're not really a bass player yet are you?" terms. Is that a possibility? - Any help, advice, solice, etc. would be mucho appreciated!
