Rollerberg2000; I think I am going to experience a similar emotion after Wednesday. That's when the auction ends on my walnut Stude. I've already packed it up just so I don't have to see it anymore. Something tells me I am going to miss this one! Anyway, last time I looked, I had 62 watchers - yikes! Stay focused on the PJB stuff!

You know, that's the only thing that scares me about the PJB rig. I've heard the clarity is so pure it magnifies sloppy playing. I guess if I get it out on a gig and it makes me suck (at least more than I do now) I'll try to stick with it. Heck, it can only make you a better player right?

If I still suck after a lengthy tryout, someone here on TB within driving distance will get the deal of a lifetime!

Your Stude is beautiful, I bet you hate to see it go after putting all that work into it. If you have that many watchers, I bet you get a flurry of activity on it closer to auction end. You certainly deserve to get alot for it.

You should have stuck some led fret markers on it! Someone got a very good deal there IMHO.

AAGH! I just missed this inside the last minute! If your high bidder bails out I will be all over that! I rebid $360 at 23 seconds after my $338 got outbid and by the time my slow-a** cricket "broadband" sent the info IT WAS GONE! Superb refinish and congratulations!

Nophret; Sorry you missed it! Bummer. I have two others though, that I will be auctioning very soon, although they are not refinished. The fellow who bought the Stude paid for it already so the deal is done. I ship in the morning. By the way, he is a drummer too, just like me! I kind of like that. I will be refinishing more of these after I get moved and set up in Texas so there will be other opportunites to snag one of my refin jobs. Thanks for the kind words.

I just looked at the Scarab auction, and do I really need to say this, you will regret this sale. I'm betting you already regret the walnut peanut sale. That flamed maple neck is extraordinary.

Take a moment, go someplace quiet, by yourself, and imagine your life one, two, or three years from now. The few hundred you make from the sale of your WB's will be long ago spent, and likely mean nothing, compared to what having those basses would bring you.

I don't expect my words to change your course, but I felt like somebody had to verbally speed slap you into some sense. best of luck, JBY

JBY; Sir; I know of what you speak, believe me! That neck is extradorinary isn't it? However, I just cannot keep all the Wishbasses (8) I have. Keep in mind I am still keeping for posterity; my Banana bass, 5 Wishbasses (JB, Fantasy, Hyper, Scarab, & Lobe) and the 6-string Screamer. On top of that Wish is building me (as we speak) one of those wild looking little mandolin jobs he builds from scraps (I just missed the last one). Honestly, if I want to stay married I need to keep the numbers down to the list above, at least for a while. The maple Scarab is already spoken for so I can't turn back now. I do so appreciate the speed slapping though - I surely deserve it!

I think my biggest regret is going to come after I get back into collecting some of Steve's earlier work - and I will be reminded that this Scarab is a really good one - alas! So many basses, so little time ...

Seriously though, I think I am going to get into a rhythm of buying these basses and refinishing them and then selling some of them - just for the enjoyment of it (and perhaps a little cash too). Anyway, what can I say? It's all madness in a way, you know ...

Well, for better or worse, the start of American Idol has slowed down the progress on the refinish. But I digress.

There is not a lot of significant reshaping that needs to happen. Where the upper and lower horns joined the neck, was very blocky and angular, I have taken my file and dremel to these joins and smoothed them out.

The other thing I like to do is to open up the path of the strings from the nut through the headstock.

While the Scroll is IMHO, a very classic, attractive body style, it is a royal pain in the neck to sand. Perhaps thats why Wish's scrolls are very rough on the inside of the scroll. I took my dremel, with 60 grit, then 120 grit, to clean up the scrolls. Hard to see in the pix, but a major change to the touch.

Also took out the ridges on the back of the neck, wood puttied the gaps, and had to do one more glue and clamp. The spaulted maple had split between the control cavity and the knot at the bottom. The finish is pretty much gone, and the whole bass is sanded down to 100 grit. I have stocked up on sandpaper to 600 grit, that may be as far as go, depends on how impatient I get. Peace, JBY

You're insights are again appreciated JBY. You're a beacon to all of us current and future (myself) Wishbass owners.

I also can see myself doing what you've done to the headstock. I don't see any reason why the strings should be making contact with the wood between the nut and the headstock.

I suspect that most bass-related eBay auctions for something non-mainstream involve a TalkBass member on one side or the other... By not attempting to snipe it, you're causing 49sfine to get less for the bass. And, if you're not trying to snipe it, chances are that someone else might and it could leave the TalkBass family anyway. If you want that Scarab, I'd say go for it and make no apologies!

Just got myself my new winter project: #1010.

It very similar in woods to my other; maple top, mahogany back, with a mahogany, purpleheart and maple neck. Fingerboard is persimmon.
