Received Scroll #866 from rollerberg2000 today at work. It's very handy to have a bass rig that lives at my work. Played it at lunch, and briefly at home tonight. Long enough to know that it's an awesome player, to start a catalogue of stuff I want to do, and to be reminded of how I dislike EMG selects.
First impression was how light it feels, easily my lightest wishbass, more so than Scroll 474. Also immediately taken with how cool the spaulted maple looks. The string spacing matches my only other 5 string, 17mm, so it feels comfy right away.
I am somewhat confused by the tone. Let me try to explain. Only fretless I own are WB's. 99% of fretless I've played in my life are WB's. WB's have a distinctive tone. To me, fretless tone = WB tone. So I expected the fretted Scroll to sound more like my other fretted basses. Not so, it sounds fretless, I mean, it sounds like a Wishbass. It really is a testament to the unique design and sound of a WB, even with frets is still sounds like a Wish. I like that. Of the 11 basses I own, they all occupy a somewhat unique sonic neighborhood. Scroll 866 sounds nothing like my other 5 string fretted bass (a neck through modified Hohner B bass).
Needless to say, I am stoked about the project that I started tonight.
First, I stripped her of her metal and magnets.
Then I glued and clamped where the body was separating.
Here you can see the Gorrilla Glue as it catalyzes with the water and expands....
