Wishbass Club pt. 2

I'm trying this again ...

This is the smoothed out headstock with some slight reshaping. This neck has a walnut stringer in the middle unlike the usual purpleheart, which I think is very kool. Headstock's are a pain to do! The entire headstock has been massaged inside and out and all edges radiused, then taken out to 2000g. It's very buttery feeling and looking - yummy!

I tired to get some of the splotches to show up that exist in this finish, but they don't come out. I learned my lesson about wet sanding on this one. Also, my seal coat was not the best - my jar of TruOil sealer had been left with the top slightly loose and it congealed a little on me. When applying, it was a struggle and went on too thick in my opinion. Next tme time I will stop everything and wait for the new sealer to arrive - I have more grain lines in this one then I wanted. Oh well, it still looks pretty good? Think?

Excellent work!!

Are there any photos about with a JB up against a human body? I really can't gauge the size of the instrument.

Perhaps I could take a picture of the JB up against another one. I have a Lobe I could place it next to (?)

If you'll notice, I rounded off the lower body point. On the JB, the way Wish shapes them, this point is sharp and very uncomfortable; plus it lands right on the inside of your forearm. Not only did I round it off, but I contoured it downward as well. It kind of disturbs the whole pointy aesthetic but I had to put function over form in this one instance. Sorry about that!

Personally, I think it looks better (and somewhat Ric like (and I love the shape of a Ric 4001/4003)).

I always wondered about some of the places that Wish places points...I figured that they'd poke the player in the ribs or something of that nature.

BillyB; I wonder where he gets his designs too. Probably from everywhere (in a way) Some are pretty crazy for sure. What I find intersting is that I would have never imagined myself liking the JB shape, but I bought this one, took a chance on it, and now I love it. I'm even thinking about custom ordering one some day in the future with a few improvements of my own. It's weird the way these things settle in with you over time. Now the Kewel, I don't see me getting another one of those - that shape just did not grow on me at all, but it was surprisingly comfortable. I love the Ricks too and the new Pelosi basses are awesome looking.

Say, do you want a pix of the JB next to my Lobe? - I can't do it up against my body because I live alone currently with my wife down in Austin. Let me know ...

I have a JB fretted with a Wenge body. I love the sound and look of the bass, but have some significant problems with neck dive (the body really doesn't have a lot of mass. I solved the problem somewhat by getting a 'boomerang' mount from Steinberger and putting that on the back. It has the effect of lengthening the upper horn and the balance is OK.

I also have a fretless Lobe and that bass balances extremely well.... better than any other bass I own.

What have your experiences been with neck dive?

I hate to admit it but this is my first exposure tothese things although Ive heard a lot. These are without a doubt the neatest basses I have ever seen. LOVE EM. Just an outsider looking in, doubt I'll ever come anywhere near the entry fee for ownership, so you won't need to worry about me bothering your club. You are some luck sons of guns.

When Wish was looking for a name for the shape is now known as "Kewel" I suggested "Splat". He said that he liked it, but must have preferred Kewel.

The JB seems to be some parts Ric 4001 and some parts "Zon Michael Manring Signature Hyperbass".

On a related note, I suspect that Wish had to rename the Hyper the Hipper due to Zon's ownership of the name Hyperbass.

No need to shoot a photo of the JB next to the Lobe...thanks though.

BassChuck: The neck dive issue - well, my JB does not dive at all. Might be because of the super thin neck on mine, but I know what you mean with the body mass being smaller and all. I own 2 Scarabs as well, and both of these have some neck dive, although the word "dive" is a bit too strong. These basses both want to hang about at the horizontal position, but not below that. Scarab #668 has a heavier body than #168 so it feels better, but neither is a problem in my mind. #168 is for sale by the way, but not because of that issue (or any issue really - just can't keep more than one body style of these things). For sure my Hyper is the most comfortable of the lot, but the JB hangs quite nicely for me as well (for some reason). My Stude (just sold it) hung very nicely standing up, it was the sitting position I couldn't get into - so that's in reverse of the neck dive sitch. My Fantasy sits just right too, but it has a heavy Zebrawood body (front & back) and is a short scale to boot, so it can't help but hang correctly! It's very comfortable as well. I'm curious about the Peanut body - never have owned one - it looks comfortable though ...

Further back in this thread is a "rebuttal" to that YouTube fiasco. ThreeStringPete wrote it and he lives near Wish and knows him personally. Go back a few pages and read what actually happened that day and you will feel better. Man, nothing leaves a mark like an internet hit! Geez ...........

I don't know if you were being sacastic or serious, but just in case ... For the price of one boutique bass by another builder, one can own several Wishbasses (as I do). They are dirt cheap ($150 - $500) but require a certain nervous system to own. If you don't like working with your hands at least a little bit, I would suggest you own something else. If you do like working with your hands, they are a whole bunch of fun and basses that everyone finds unique.

No, as I said, not sarcastic at all. I admit I said that before i really read any of the posts or researched it. I just looked at the purdy pictures. Just assumed with all that carving and wood it would be hella pricey. Not sure any of this is my cup of tea, and I've heard some rather conflicting opinions on the company and its products, but ****, for the money that I'm now seeing they cost, it might be a cool purchase someday. Even if I have to pay some other dude to get the thing set up right. Sure wouldn't fit into a black metal band though.

LousyBP; Gee, a Scarab would look killer in a metal band (they can look downright creepy - I should send you a pix of one of mine) - but not sure how the sound would integrate. You would proably need to add a much hotter pickup for one thing. Plus, you can get them fretted, although they are rare in comparsion to the fretless units. In fact, a couple pages back there is a fretted Scroll for sale that looks way kool ... Still, for those more quiet moments at home, or for when you get way older and move into other music genres? :)

Kinda' wild looking, wouldn't you say? I have not touched this one yet and it plays great just as it is, but I would like a hotter pickup. Anyway, thanks for looking and chiming in.

Those pics won't show up for some reason. This computer sucks. Actually I play a bunch of stuff, and I jam with a few hippy types that would eat something like that up! Only thing is I'd want a lined fretless. Maybe inlay the lines with some real dark wood in a purpleheart board? just a thought. sounds like cool woodworking is the name of the game with these things. And considering the starting price, I could probably save up my pennies and spring for some custom woodworking that I can't do myself. In any case it'll have to wait, gotta unload my elrick for a pedulla!
