Hey Ogle,
you finished this one yourself with Tung Oil right? I have been thinking of doing this to one of mine.
How many coats did you put on (rubbed in with steel wool, right?) And how long did you wait to put on the second coat?

It was Tru-Oil, the Birchwwod Casey gunstock finish stuff in a bottle. I just sanded a little and did one coat in the morning, went to work, sanded a little, put on another coat, and left it til morning. Eight hours drying time between coats was plenty.

I just put it on with my fingers, and used successively finer grades of sandpaper, and used less Tru-Oil eack subsequent coat.

How many coats? I don't remember, maybe six??? Not a whole lot, really, and one of those bottles goes a LOOONG way.

This is exactly what I did with mine. I put on 6 coats. Next time I'll do more, but as you put on more coats, it really doesn't improve the look all that much, so the motivation gets to be less and less. (that first coat looks great though!)

Bryan... Knowing I was going to do this, Steve left me a big "block" of wood at the end of the headstock, I just cut the curly scroll "sides" off a broken cello neck and wood glued them to the sides of that block, then sanded down everything round so it all looked like one piece, and then Tru-Oiled it.

With that scroll headstock and still relatively chunky neck, it's as close as I have to a standup bass "vibe" in my collection.

Take a close look at this pic of the very "raw" bass down at Wish's place... the headstock has the big piece of wood at the end left, and I just shaped it a little and glued the curled scroll side pieces on there. If you asked him, he'd surely do this again, I'd bet.

Oh I agree. I like the idea of all the holes. But that is a terrible body design to begin with. Although I do like the striping idea.

Yeah, I think that is by far the ugliest one I've seen from him. The holes on it make me ITCH!

From what I understand, he's going to have four total "striped" basses this month - having used up scraps from other projects. The Lobe is okay, but this one should be launched into space! keep your eye out, he might have something for you yet. Have you thought of ordering one direct?

yeah, I heard that. Less than two months ago, I only had two basses - 1 electric, and 1 acoustic.

Now I'm up to 7 with two more on the way (1 project I'm putting together with a warwick neck, and one custom ordered 5 string wishbass)

I have a JB and I really like it. It never fails to get responses from other players.

I just got an email from Steve. My new one is finished. I got a Lobe fretless. Solid Walnut body with Persimmon fingerboard. I'm sending the balance today and hope to have it next week. After I get the Tung Oil on it, I'll post pics.

A couple new basses are up on the 'Bay to fulfill your Christmas Wish.

That Bubinga Scarab is nice, but ya know, I can't say I'm all that crazy about the look of the mahogany strung with purpleheart on the necks. Purpleheart is such a cool looking wood that it needs to be set off with a lighter wood, like maple or something, to show it off.

I know, I know, we don't buy 'em for the look, we buy 'em for the sound.....

When the sun rises in the Northwest, BassDudeSA will likely snag another scarab, right? :-)
