Bob Babbitt (born Robert Kreinar in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American bassist, most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records' studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966–1972, as well as his tenure as part of MFSB for Philadelphia International Records afterwards.

Also in 1968-1970, with Mike Campbell, Ray Monette and Andrew Smith he formed the band Scorpion
Babbitt traded off sessions with original Motown bassist James Jamerson. Over the course of his career, Babbit has played on over 200 Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits, for Motown and other labels as well.[citation needed]

Among Babbitt's most notable bass performances are "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" by Stevie Wonder, "War" by Edwin Starr, "The Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Inner City Blues" by Marvin Gaye, "Band Of Gold" by Freda Payne, "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" and Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) by

The Temptations. He has participated in hundreds of other hits, including "Little Town Flirt" by Del Shannon, "I Got a Name" by Jim Croce, "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight & the Pips, "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey & the Detroit Guitar Band, "Supernatural Thing" by Ben E. King and "(The) Rubberband Man" by The Spinners.

He also played on the Jimi Hendrix album Crash Landing. He accepted an offer from Phil Collins to perform on his album of Motown and 1960s soul classics Going Back.

Bob Babbitt has been a participant in the annual Rockin Christmas Fund charity fundraiser event held each year to help children in need.[citation needed]

Babbitt was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends online Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of the Funk Brothers.

He appeared onstage on an episode of American Idol backing up Jacob Lusk's performance of "You're All I Need To Get By" for AI's Motown Week in March 2011.

City Of Nashville to Honor Babbitt!

The City of Nashville, Tennessee is honoring bass legend Bob Babbitt with a Star on the "Music City Walk Of Fame". The ceremony is scheduled for June 5th and is open to the public. Babbitt is being inducted with Steve Winwood. Praying for Bob to be there to enjoy the honor.

Wow........Just finished praying for Bob and his family. When talking about supplying the groove, Mr. Babbitt is a master. One of my favorite tunes from back in the day that really grabbed my ear (before I even thought about playing bass) is Dennis Coffey's "Scorpio". I later found out the Bob was the bassist on that classic.

Just finished a couple of rounds of Ball of Confusion in honor of Bob. My thoughts and prayers are with Bob and his family.

Edit: Watching "Phil Collins Going Back: Live at the Roseland Ballroom" (Sunday, 5/23/2012, 1:00 AM PBS) . I'm not a Phil Collins fan, but the show is worth watching just to hear Bob Babbit on bass.

As I report this, Babbitt is being honored with his Star on the Music City Walk Of Fame in Nashville. I'm hopeful Bob was able to attend the ceremony although I haven't heard. Once again...congratulations Babbitt.

Bobs wife accepted the honor on his behalf and was headed to the hospital to show Bob the plaque. I've been told there wasn't a dry eye amongst Bobs friends who attended the event and the presenter, Dave Pomeroy choked up during his speech.
