PS I am still waiting to receive my SGD equipped bass, so I can have an informed opinion over his pickups (tone and looks ;)). David has sent the pickups a LONG LONG time ago to the luthier, but the luthier had some major problems that delayed him till now (none of the luthiers that frequent on TB). Let's hope all his problems have been resolved and the bass will be shipped very very soon

Yeah... how long has it been now? I gave up on asking about that bass! I figured you'd let me know when you got it.

I think that was the first six string set?

Lovely basses you have there.

yes, indeed, the first SGD 6str set:hyper:. But the bass has yet to arrive. By the way, I've combined the pickups with a Noll TCM 3P B2042 [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I'll let you know as soon as it arrives :)

Those are cool preamps. I had to fix the wiring on one here a couple of weeks ago. One of the preamps I'm working on is similar to that.

Well I just got the magnets in yesterday, and man are they perfect! The pole screws are currently in production but are 6-7 weeks out. They are a pretty custom screw and take some time to make. Dave and I had the metal in one of the pole screws analysed to determine the specific alloy and got the results back a week or two ago. I have to buy 20000 screws to make it affordable, so it's a major undertaking.

personally im currently working on having bobbins and a cover molded, but its going to cost me $9000 to have it done. Though I have no intentions of selling pickups, just instruments. Thats why the joint effort between me and david is so effective - we're not competing with each other.

EDIT: The bobbin and cover are for myself, and unrelated to David.

Any info on how will this filter-based pre differ from the one offered by ACG? That one's supposed to be Wal-ish in some ways.

<subscribed!>

The ACG has a low pass filter for each pickup with variable Q (resonance), and a high pass filter which works as a treble control.

The Wal preamp has a low pass filter for each pickup with a frequency knob that pulls up to increase the resonance of the filter. It doesn't have the high pass filter, and the Q is not continuously variable.

So the ACG is actually a more advanced version of the preamp.

The older Wal preamp had a few interesting features. It didn't have the low pass filter, but it had a passive tone control that actually changed the input impedance of the preamp, and it had a mid boost for each pickup, and a "pick attack" EQ that boosted the high frequencies.

I haven't decided exactly what features I want in the preamp. Low pass filters are cool, but so are regular bass/treble tone controls. I think svirfnebli's preamp will be pretty much like the current Wal preamp.

Just to clarify. The ACG with dual low pass filters can only be had on ACG's own basses. The ACG that you can buy separately has only one low pass filter for the combined signal.

To quote Johnny Carson... "I did not know that!"

OK, so the Wall clone has one filter per pickup, and no high pass filter.

I literally just finished drawing out the PCB for the modern wal preamp. Im going to try to make a few of them and see how they work. I'm going to make a direct clone just to try doing it. I have to order some pretty specialized parts to do it.. $600 in transformers, $400 in pots, etc.

I cant see making them on a production basis, but its a fun project for me. I've now tracked down ALL the parts, but many of them are obsolete, or custom.. The stupid transformers is like 15 euros a piece and I have to buy a ton of them. The IC onboard hasnt been made for like 10 years, but I bought a bunch of those too. The transistors are still made, so I got lucky there.

I really sat down and listened to the pre the other day. The first 15 minutes i found the pick attack useless, but then I suddenly got it and it was instantly usefull.

I don't make a Wal clone.
I have two versions of the pre-amp. The EQ01 has one lowpass filter per pickup and a high pass filter working globally. This is only available in my own basses.
The EQ02 which is the retail version has one lowpass filter and one high pass filter.
