Maybe this would be better for the Wal thread, but I anticipate ordering a pair of these when they're ready and putting the into a body made by Warmoth or someone similar. Has anybody made measurements on things like pickup placement? Besides the pickups/electronics that's gonna be one of the most important factors in getting the tone close to the real thing.

can you record some samples of the acg pre?

Ill see if I can in the coming days. I was going to originally after I got it put in because I know alot of people are interested in it (especially in a G&L) but Ive been slammed at work, busy doing family things (I have two young children), not to mention being busy with my band.

My band did recently record a demo of about 10 cover songs and I used it on probably 7 or 8 of them, but its in the hands of the "studio" we used who is finishing up the clean up and vocals. I dont know when we will get that back. In lieu of that Ill see if I can do some to post.

That would be real nice of you, John. But as i understand it didn't sound like wal with only the pre but it did improve your overall sound?I have a carvin custom lb70 and id really would like to try the ACG...i assume it would be worth it...

Yes it didnt make it sound like a Wal (actually I think I could get more of a Wal tone with my stock L2500) Maybe its how my tech wired it, I dont know. Now the two pickups can be either series or parallel individually, and I can blend them, and he put a mute on the 3rd switch. I dont know if that was the only way to hook it up, but I thought about asking my tech about it.

It does sound good, especially on the E and A strings. It makes them growl but I have to watch the high pass or it gets too bright. I think it lost some mids compared to the stock preamp (unless I go heavily towards the bridge pickup, it which case the bottom end drops). Stay tuned.

I dunno...it doesn't seem to me that a copy if the pickup would give a Wal sound, I still think it's in the Wal Custom preamp. Reason being, the old Wal Pro Bass, and the Custom Bass have the same pickup but used different preamps and therefore sound different.

The preamps are different, however, in the Pro bass the two rows of coils are connected together in series.

In the Custom, each string pair of coils is in series, and each string is taken out separately and then all the strings are summed in parallel.

That's going to make a huge difference in tone, with the Custom being more low Z and not as thick as the Pro in tone.

I had a big order for an OEM customer to take care of, but right after that I'll be finishing up the first working clone pickup. :D

Just curious.

I had a typo I fixed, but what I meant is the older pro bass had the coils in series. The newer basses have them wired up differently. The coils in series will have a thicker tone. The coils in parallel will be brighter. I wasn't very clear.

The pickup I reverse engineered was from a Pro, and I have the pro schematic that shows how it's wired to the preamp.

The newer preamp and pickups are wired up differently.

I'm probably going to wire it up the newer way, but I'd like to have it switchable, including to a split pickup configuration.

Hi
The nature of the low pass filter means the bottom end is always present what you are hearing is the addittion of the higher frequencies not a reduction in the bottom end.

Hi Alan,

Yes it took some getting used to with the low and high pass filters, but it does sound great and I highly recommend your preamp to anyone. Now Im wondering what the bass would sound like with some Wal pickups and the ACG preamp....:D
