Won the Wal pickup on ebay!!!

That's an RC filter, similar to the passive tone control on most basses. You can't sweep the frequency on that. You have to change the cap value.

The filter in the Wal is an active device built up around an op amp or two.

Edit: in light of some recent practical work/research on my uni course, managed to find the following Invalid Link Removed. Goes through from the relative basics on to active filters. (As well as passive)
 
Any word on it being finished yet?

I know this sounds like a broken record but...

Here's the current status. I have the proper sized ceramic magnets now. I'm finishing up the first prototype pickup. I had the coils wound for a while now, but I had to fabricate the threaded keeper bars for the pole pieces and stuff. That's about finished.

I'm trying to decide on the best way to bring out all those wires. Joe I know you wanted a ribbon cable, so I'm working on that for you.

The preamp is underway, I have it bread boarded and I'm tweaking the circuit here and there.

So it's getting very close to being finished. :D
 
all this talk about high- and low-pass filters... how do they compare to the Chandler Tone-X? Or rather, how does it fit in with those? Is it either? Or something totally different? Thanks!

The Chandler Tone-X is a band-pass filter. It only passes a fairly narrow band of frequencies. It's basically a wah pedal. It even uses an inductor in the circuit.

Low-pass filters pass only the frequencies below the cutoff frequency set by the frequency control. High pass filters pass the frequencies above. A band-pass filter is like one slider on a graphic EQ, only you can change the frequency (like on a parametric EQ).

State variable filters allow you to change the frequency with a control, and you also have a resonace, or "Q" control. When you turn the resonance up, you get a sharper peak or boost at the cutoff frequency.

For the DIYers out there, the Super Tone Control in the book Electronic Projects for Musicians by Craig Anderton is a really cool state variable filter. It features low, band, and high-pass filters. You can combine them; each module has a volume control. High and low pass together give you a notch filter. It also has frequency and resonance (Q) controls.

I don't have a bass that fits the pickup yet, but from preliminary tests, it sounds like the original, which also doesn't fit into any of my basses.

I need to make a test bass! It's a rather deep pickup in size. I'm working on a shallower model too without adjustable poles.

The preamp will be filter based. I also have a 3-band EQ in the works.

Didn't you say that the initial pup would be MM size? You could buy an OLP Stingray, drop it in for testing, give enough room for the preamp to be outside (so you don't have to modify the bass at all), record some clips and return it if you needed to.
