Wood Matters Club!!!

Neck/fretboard wood? Sure, I could see where that would matter.

My "problem" is with those who insist that body wood makes a substantial tonal difference.

I agree with your first statement.

I also used to have a "problem" with the body-wood-dictates-tone-more-than-anything-else guys, but then I figured something out...that rather than trying to convice them otherwise, my time and energy would be better spent trying to row a boat with a rope.

Well, then go back about 19 pages deep into this forum and you'll find a bunch of like-minded individuals all agreeing that the body wood is insignificant.

Oh, wait.... they're all posting HERE now, in the "Wood Matters Club". That's odd.

The common denominator is Dan's attitude towards those who question the validity of his so called tests. His responses to them are very similar to his comments we've seen here.

I got a good chuckle out of this. I leave this thread for a while, and when I come back you're still talking about me. :p

This thread has 420 posts and only 29 members?? Amazing.

This thread is no longer the "Wood Matters" club. It is the "We Experience Emotional Turmoil Because Dan Atkinson Thinks Other Factors Matter More Than Wood Club".

I'm an idiot and my audio tests are useless, and anyone who gets anything out of my tests is a moron. I get it. So why do you care? Why does it get under your skin so much? Why not talk about how wood matters??

I think I'll leave this thread for a couple of days and then check back. I wonder if you will still be talking about me.

:hiding:

Let me tell you WHY wood matters and does so immensely. The instrument is only the tool of the artist and nothing more. It is the tool that most directly allows that artist to express their art. Art, especially music, is not relegated to a single sense. Art - good art - effects all of our senses. In the creation of music the sense of touch and sight have a great deal to do with the total artistic experience.

I loved the feel of my Wenge necked MTD basses. Feeling the grain on the back of the neck always let me know where I was on the neck. The sight of my naturally stained blackened redwood top on my Zon TJ makes me want to pick up the instrument, hold it, play it for hours on end. The wonderful and articulate sound of my Ash neck/Maple Board MTD 535 gave me inspiration to create new music and find techniques that took full advantage of that sound.

I will fully admit non of this is scientific. BUT ladies and gentleman, we are not talking science here, we are talking art.

WOOD makes a difference

I'm not quite sure why you guys continue to argue. You aren't going to "sway" each others opinion one way or the other. People either "believe" or the "don't believe". In order to convince one sect, you'd need to have a fully scientific set of tests run with a large sample set...and that just isn't possible with the limited tools of the people here. And to convince the other sect, you'd need to be able to quantify be "percentage" just how much the body wood actually affects the tone....again, not possible with the tools and resources available here.

What it all amounts to is a bunch of people getting mad at each other over OPINIONS and wasting a bunch of time and energy on something that they can't possibly do....convincing the other that "your right and he's wrong".

You guys keep trying to "trick" each other into saying something wrong so you can go "A HA !!! See it does/doesn't matter, and you said it !". Well, sorry to tell you, but you guys aren't gonna prove that you are smarter than one another. The REAL smart people (obviously not me) are staying out of this thread because it's like two little kids bitching and arguing about who's Dad is the better bowler/skier/football player/etc .

If you "don't" believe that wood matters, then why would you waste time in this thread trying to convince everyone ? If you "do" believe wood matters, then why would you waste time replying over and over to someone who doesn't believe ?

I've got a lot of respect for some of you guys....but I'm seriously starting to lose it. Act like grown ups.... or at least intelligent teenagers.... because right now many of you are acting like 5 year olds who want some ice cream but can't have it.

I'm off my high horse now.

Sorry for the rant.

Exactly. Several of us in this "Wood Matters Club" thread have shared experiences and personal observations of the effect wood has in our instruments, but it keeps getting invaded by trolls dropping in who just want to throw bombs.

400 posts and 29 members? Yeah, this is WHY!
Go post in that other thread, 19-pages back.

.

And it continues.

This is what I'm talking about - you could have easily left it at "Exactly. Several of us in this "Wood Matters Club" thread have shared experiences and personal observations of the effect wood has in our instruments"....but you had to add the "getting invaded by trolls" part. All that does is perpetuate this silliness.

You know better than that, come on.

My statement above was not "one sided"...it was "everyone here is being ridiculous", regardless of which side of the fence they're on. "Picking and choosing" the parts you think support your side is part of what started this whole bit of silliness anyway.

Don't like Dan (and others) in the thread ? Don't reply to him.

:)

My post:

The universe is alive and fluid, the wood used in a guitar or Bass (or rake handle or paper, for that matter) is a "document" of a small portion of a once alive and fluid entity. No two pieces from the same source can be the same because there are no exact duplicates in any two spaces of a living entity.

There can be no "all things being equal except......." the observer influences the observed.

So, "does thinking about tone influence tone?" is the real question

wood is pretty and it matters (to me)

with a wink and a nod.

dude are you baked?

Dude... I just noticed this.... and you ask that like it's a bad thing.....

:bassist:

I've been away for awhile... 'cause I think wood matters ('nuff said) but I just read this whole thread and this thread now reminds me of the Atheist Bass Players Club conflict that happened awhile back. Sheeesh

The common denominator is Dan's attitude towards those who question the validity of his so called tests. His responses to them are very similar to his comments we've seen here.

Dan's gone out of his way to do more tests that appease any naysayers in spite of the way they have come off (on TB at least) as irrationally negative and emotional about the whole affair. Dan has never said anything about wood not mattering, he's just offered some sound clips and challenged us all to reevaluate our ideas; some of his tests showed people could hear a difference and others didn't; and that's the gist of it. The fact that this has caused such a firestorm, when Dan has NOT been making any sweeping generalizations about his results, tells me that people are indeed becoming upset by what they are hearing or not hearing, and getting defensive. It's silly.

The only counter-tests posted that were an attempt to highlight so-called obvious differences in body wood tone didn't produce spectacular results. The rest of the reaction by the hardcore defenders of the faith has just been a bunch of slander as far as I'm concerned.

I'll stop posting here for no other reason than to see if Dan's right, will you guys continue to post in this thread if it's not to bash him?
